The Opening Ceremony of 2013 Science and Technology Innovation Talents Development Plan for High School Students held at SYSU

On the morning of September 8, the opening ceremony of 2013 Science and Technology Innovation Talents Development Plan for High School students (hereinafter referred to as the "Talents Development Plan for High School Students") was held in Swasey Hall on South Campus. Mr. He Zhen, Secretary of Party Leadership Group of Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology; Mr. Wu Huanquan, Vice Chairman of Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology; Professor Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University; 8 visiting tutors of the plan and the leaders, teachers and students from Bureau of Education of Guangzhou Municipality, Sun Yat-sen University and high schools attended the ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by Professor Chen Min, Executive Dean of YAT-SEN School, SYSU.
Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng delivered an opening speech at the ceremony. SYSU has cooperated with Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology to implement the Talents Development Plan for High School Students. The recommendation of tutors and comprehensive evaluation of students have been completed. The University will provide high quality education resources to cultivate these outstanding high school students.
Vice Chairman Wu Huanquan introduced the background of the Talents Development Plan for High School Students, reviewed the preparation and implementation of the plan in Guangdong Province, and put forward the objectives of further work.
The tutor appointment ceremony
The tutor appointment ceremony, student-tutor ceremony, and the unveiling ceremony of the "Training Base of Talents Development Plan for High School Students of Guangdong Province” were held at the opening ceremony. Eight professors of Sun Yat-sen University including Prof. Yao Zheng’an were appointed as "Visiting Tutors" of the plan. The first batch of 38 outstanding high school students including Li Shangrong of The Affiliated High School of South China Normal University were selected to participate in the plan and they bowed to the tutors. At the same time, the Training Base of Talents Development Plan for High School Students of Guangdong Province was established and inaugurated in Sun Yat-sen University. The University will undertake the task to cultivate high school talents in science and technology innovation in Guangdong province.

After the opening ceremony, the high school students, divided in groups of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, took part in the first scientific research and academic exchange activity.
In June of 2013, the China Association for Science and Technology launched the “Talents Development Plan for High School Students". Sun Yat-sen University was selected to be one of the 19 pilot universities to implement the plan.
It is learned that the Talents Development Plan for High School Students aims to support famous scientists in universities to guide outstanding high school students to carry out scientific research projects, stimulate the students' interest in basic sciences, help them to grasp the nature of science and promote the cultivation of innovative talents.
