In “The 9th National Representative Congress and Academic symposium of Genetics Society of China” held from September 18, 2013 to September 21, 2013 in Harbin, Professor He Zhumei from School of Life Sciences of Sun Yat-sen University was honored the first Tan Jia-Zhen Genetics Education Award, along with Professor Chen Defu from Nankai University. Professor Zhao Shouyuan from Fudan University was honored the first Tan Jia-Zhen Special Contribution Award in Genetics Education.

Genetics is one of the important fundamental disciplines in biology. It is the major fundamental course of life sciences, agriculture, forestry, livestock, and medical science and so on in institutions of higher learning, and genetics education cultivates a lot of talented people for the development of genetics. The purpose of the Genetics Society of China setting up Tan Jia-Zhen Genetics Education Award is to encourage and honor the educationists who have worked in genetics education and contributed in the development of genetics, and to encourage more geneticists to contribute in genetics education. Professor He Zhumei achieving the award is a proof of the School of Life Sciences gaining a good influence in genetics education in the nation.
In the genetics meeting, Professor He Zhumei gave an educational report of “Fusion of new and old genetics knowledge” and a talk in microbiology entitled “The connection between oxidative stress and aflatoxin biosynthesis”.
