International Conference on Tourism Landscapes and Tourism in Marginal Areas held in Kanas

The International Conference on Tourism Landscapes and Tourism in Marginal Areas co-hosted by Sun Yat-sen University, Commission on the Geography of Tourism, Leisure and Global Change of International Geographical Union, Tourism Geography Commission of Geographical Society of China and Northern Arizona University, was successfully held in Kanas, Xinjiang on September 19-23, 2013. It was organized by Center for Tourism Planning and Research at Sun Yat-sen University and Department of Geography, Planning and Recreation at Northern Arizona University, and co-organized by Altay Prefectural Administrative Office, Kanas National Park Management Committee, Xinjiang Normal University and Tourism College of Xinjiang University. Professor Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University, attended and addressed the opening ceremony. Nearly one hundred scholars from countries including the US, New Zealand and Germany, and from universities including Sun Yat-sen University, Nanjing University, Fudan University, Renmin University of China and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, attended the conference.

The conference consists of keynote presentation, assembly presentation and parallel sessions. The participants took part in forums to discuss themes such as Tourism and Landscape, Tourism in Marginal Areas and Long-distance Tourism, New Theories and New Methods in Tourism Research, and New tourism peoples and cultures. The biennial conference has deepened dialogue and exchanges among scholars and promoted tourism study of relevant areas.

At the closing ceremony, a series of awards were presented. Professor Guo Laixi from Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research received the China Tourism Geography Lifetime Achievement Award by Tourism Geography Commission of Geographical Society of China. Professor Bao Jigang from Sun Yat-sen University and Professor Wu Bihu from Peking University received the Outstanding Contribution Award. Five young researchers were awarded for their excellent papers selected by the academic committee.
