24 SYSU research achievements win 2018 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award

On March 27, 2019, the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and the Guangdong Provincial Government held the Guangdong Science and Technology Innovation Conference in Guangzhou. The conference was aimed to implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speeches and instructions on Guangdong as well as the spirit of the national “two sessions” and the National Science and Technology Awards Conference, and in accordance with the requirements of the sixth plenary session of the 12th CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, grasp the major historic opportunity of building the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and make arrangements to promote the science and technology innovation work of Guangdong province. Li Xi, Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, attended the conference and delivered a speech. The conference was presided over by Ma Xingrui, Governor of Guangdong Province. Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, some award winners from SYSU, and representatives of provincial laboratories attended the meeting.

The conference commended advanced units and individuals who received the 2018 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award. Twenty-four research achievements of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) received the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award. Among them, as the primary research unit at which the research project was undertaken and completed, SYSU won 18 awards, including 1 outstanding contribution award, 11 first prizes, and 6 second prizes, covering 22.4% of the total number of first prizes in the whole province, an increase of 83% compared with our record high of 6 first-prize projects. Six projects with SYSU as a participating unit won the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award, among which “Key Technologies for the Construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge” won the only grand prize of the science and technology progress award, showing SYSU’s support capability for the national major project.

Professor Ma Jun from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center won the outstanding contribution award.

Eleven SYSU projects won the first prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award. They are:

"Structural Design and Property Modulation of Lanthanide-based Magnetic Compounds” led by Professor Tong Mingliang from the School of Chemistry received first prize of the natural sciences award;

"Optical trapping and manipulation by micro-/nano-optical fibers” led by Professor Li Baojun from the School of Materials Science and Engineering received first prize of the natural sciences award;

"Origin of Innate Immune Diversity in Vertebrates” led by Professor Xu Anlong from the School of Life Sciences received first prize of the natural sciences award;

“The novel regulatory mechanisms of HCC growth and metastasis” led by Professor Zhuang Shimei from the School of Life Sciences received first prize of the natural sciences award;

"Studies on Etiology, Pathogenesis and Molecular Markers of Epstein-Barr Virus Related Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma” led by Professor Zeng Musheng from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center received first prize of the natural sciences award;

"Robust vision feature extraction and its non-linear analysis” led by Professor Lai Jianhuang from the School of Data and Computer Science received first prize of the natural sciences award;

"Design, synthesis, and mechano-responsive mechanism of new organic luminescent materials” led by Professor Chi Zhenguo from the School of Chemistry received first prize of the natural sciences award;

“The application of molecular biomarkers in the individualized diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers” led by Professor Xu Ruihua from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center received first prize of the science and technology progress award;

"Innovation and application of key technology of individualized treatment for gastric cancer” led by Professor He Yulong from The First Affiliated Hospital received first prize of the science and technology progress award;

"The technological innovation and application of colorectal cancer prevention and treatment” led by Professor Wang Lei from The Sixth Affiliated Hospital received first prize of the science and technology progress award;

"Novel Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Approaches for Glaucoma” led by Professor Zhuo Yehong from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center received first prize of the science and technology progress award.

The 2018 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award was presented to 176 projects, including 2 recipients of the outstanding contribution award, 1 grand prize, 49 first prizes, 119 second prizes, and 5 recipients of the science and technology cooperation award.
