Prof. Jean Louis Morel appointed as Adjunct Professor of SYSU

On the morning of November 4, 2016, the appointment ceremony of Prof. Jean Louis Morel from University of Lorraine (UL) as Adjunct Professor of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) was held on Guangzhou East Campus of SYSU. Mr. Nicolas Gherardi, Scientific and Higher education Attache of the Consulate General of France in Guangzhou; Dr. Guy Richard, Director of Research and Head of Environment and Agronomy Division of National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA); Prof. Christophe Schwartz, Director of the Laboratory of Soil and Environment (LSE) of UL; Dr. Luo Teng, Assistant President of SYSU; Prof. Qiu Rongliang, Dean of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering; and representatives from the Sino-French Joint Laboratory of Soil Environment attended the event.

At the appoint ceremony, Mr. Nicolas Gherardi spoke highly of Prof. Morel for his contribution to the promotion of scientific and technological cooperation between France and China. Prof. Qiu Rongliang reviewed Prof. Morel’s participation in supervising graduate students and undergraduate teaching at the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of SYSU. Dr. Luo Teng thanked Prof. Morel for his efforts in promoting scientific collaboration and talent cultivation between SYSU and UL, and hoped that Prof. Morel would continue to play an active role in research cooperation on environment and soil as well as international talent training at SYSU. Dr. Luo Teng presented the certificate of appointment to Prof. Morel.

Prof. Morel delivered a speech at the appointment ceremony. He said that he would continue to make his contribution to the cooperation between SYSU and UL.

The appointment of Prof. Morel as Adjunct Professor at SYSU’s School of Environmental Science and Engineering will promote the disciplinary construction, academic research and talent cultivation in the fields of environment and soil pollution and remediation, as well as the construction of international cooperation platforms at SYSU.

Prof. Morel is an internationally renowned researcher in the field of soil pollution and remediation. He served as vice-president for research of UL (2002-2006), director of the Laboratory of Soil and Environment at UL (1994-2012). From 2007 to 2015, he chaired the international SUITMA group (Soils in urban, industrial, traffic, mining and military areas) of the International Union for Soil Science. He leads the GISFI, a scientific consortium of 10 research groups devoted to the understanding of the functioning of brownfields, and the development of processes for soil remediation. He has published 220 papers in international peer-reviewed journals.

Since he became an invited professor of SYSU in 2008, Prof. Morel has actively participated in the teaching and research of both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the School of Environmental Science and Engineering. He has published nearly twenty high-level papers in collaboration with the soil pollution and remediation team at the School and jointly applied for two international cooperation projects, and jointly supervised two PhD candidates. With the help of Prof. Morel, the Sino-French Joint Laboratory of Soil Environment was officially established by SYSU, UL and INRA in December 2015.
