Professor Hubert Savenije gives a lecture at World Distinguished Scholar Forum, SYSU

In order to strengthen the international academic cooperation, on the afternoon of November 12, 2016, an academic forum was held on East Campus of Sun Yat -sen University (SYSU). Professor Hubert Savenije from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, was invited to give a lecture at this “World Distinguished Scholar Forum”. Associate Professor Huayang Cai from the Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Research, SYSU, hosted the event. More than 100 people from SYSU and other universities attended the forum.

Vice Dean Professor Xiaoming Sun from the School of Marine Sciences firstly expressed his warmest welcome to all attendees of the forum. And then he emphasized the forum’s vital importance in bringing great minds and ideas together on academic cooperation, and in providing more opportunities and platforms from at home and abroad. He also hoped that the forum would benefit teachers and students in their research and disciplinary construction. At the appointment ceremony, Vice Dean Xiaoming Sun presented Professor Savenije with the certificate of appointment of Visiting Professor of the School Of Marine Sciences.

This forum was divided into two sections. In the first section, Professor Savenije gave a topic on “Oceanic and continental sources of precipitation”, which showed a whole view of water cycles from ocean and land and a worldwide horizon of the moisture resource differences between China and outside, especially emphasized the precipitation characteristics in the southern part of China. In the second section, Professor Savenije shared his views on “How to write a scientific paper”, brought methods and tips on literature writing and publishing. The attendees asked several interesting questions and got valuable suggestions.

The closing speech for the forum was made by Associate Professor Huayang Cai. He expressed his sincere gratitude to all guests and audience, and to their great support for this World Distinguished Scholar Forum.

Prof. Savenije is Professor of Hydrology at the Delft University of Technology, where he is the head of the Water Resources Section. Since 2013 he is President of IAHS (the International Association for Hydrological Sciences). In 2015 Prof. Savenije was awarded the Alexander von Humboldt medal by the European Geosciences Union "for outstanding research in developing regions for the benefit of people and society in the field of hydrology and water resources". Prof. Savenije has published widely in the fields of hydrology, estuary hydraulics and water resource management. In 2005 he published a book on "Salinity and Tides in Alluvial Estuaries" (second & revised edition freely downloadable). He is chief executive editor of Hydrology and Earth System Sciences (HESS) and editor in chief of Physics and Chemistry of the Earth. He has worked as hydrologist and water resources engineer in many different parts of the world and particularly in Africa, Asia and South America.
