On October 19, 2016, The Analytical Scientist magazine published its first ever all-women Power List, which features 50 talented scientists who brilliantly represent the scope and impact of the analytical sciences. Professor Gongke Li of Sun Yat-sen University is on the Power List. Congratulations! (Network link: https://theanalyticalscientist.com/power-list/2016/)

Professor Gongke Li
Dr. Gongke Li
Professor, Director of Institute of Analytical Sciences, School of Chemistry, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China
1. What are you most passionate about in your field?
With expertise in chromatographic analysis and spectral analysis, my major research interest is focused on the development of modern sample preparation technique and its application to trace analysis of complex systems, especially for food, environmental and biological samples. I also study preparative-scale separation method for natural products. Recently, I have great interest in surface enhanced Raman scattering imaging analysis.
2. Please describe a pivotal moment in your career.
The change of research field from atomic spectral analysis to chromatographic analysis after obtained my PhD degree in 1992 and then the establishment of my research group for separation and analysis of complex systems is a pivotal moment in my career.

3. What do you predict to be the most game-changing technology or advance in the next five years?
The development of in situ, in vivo and online sample preparation technique is a promising field. The theranostics incorporated with nanotechnology and Raman imaging will be a rapidly growing field. The research of on-site analysis will be paid much attention. The practicability of analytical method will be more concerned for complex sample analysis.
4. Biography of Professor Gongke Li
Professor Li obtained her BSc(1986) in Chemistry, MSc(1989) and PhD(1992) degrees in Analytical Chemistry supervised by Professor Zhanxia Zhang from Sun Yat-sen University. She became a professor since 2000. She worked in the Tokai University of Japan as a visiting scholar from 1994 to 1996. She was the director of the Institute of Analytical Sciences, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Sun Yat-sen University since 2001. With expertise in chromatography analysis and spectral analysis, her major research interest is focused on the developments of modern sample preparation techniques, analytical techniques for trace analysis of complex systems, such as the environmental, food and biological samples and coupling device for online analysis. She also studies both analytical- and preparative-scale separations methods for for natural products. Recently, she has great interest in surface enhanced Raman scattering imaging analysis.
Professor Li has published more than 320 peer-refereed journal articles, one monograph and twenty-three patents for invention. She is currently the associate editor of Journal of Separation Science and the member of editorial board of thirteen academic journals including Journal of Chromatography A. she is a member of the chemical teaching Advisory Committee for Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education since 2001. 2 Science and Technology Awards and 2 honor prizes have been granted to her from the national and provincial governments. In 2015, Professor Li was awarded the Chinese women's analytical chemist by the Analytical Chemistry Committee of Chinese Chemical Society.
