September 21 to 23 witnessed the IEEE International Conference on RFID Technology and Applications (IEEE RFID-TA 2016) organized by IEEE and held in Shunde by SYSU-CMU Shunde International Joint Research Institute (JRI). As a world-top IOT-related academic conference, this is the first time that IEEE RFID-TA has been to Shunde, China. Chair of IEEE Council on RFID Ms. Emily Sopensky, Deputy Director General Xuyan Xu of Foshan Education Bureau, and Deputy Director Jingbai Luo of Shunde District Education Bureau as well as other relevant leaders attended the conference and made speeches. Prof. L. Richard Carley – IEEE Fellow, Professor of Carnegie Mellon University, and Prof. Zhi Ning Chen – IEEE Fellow, Professor of National University of Singapore, were the keynote speakers, while the research institutes staff and corporate R&D personnel from more than 20 countries and regions like Japan, the U.S., and South Korea were present.

IEEE RFID-TA 2016 provided a platform for the academic exchanges between the technical experts and scholars from different countries and regions. It also offered opportunities for the promotion of the IOT technology development, for the integration of Guangdong local enterprises with the international academic world, and for JRI teachers and students to communicate for further innovation. The conference centered on Radio Frequency Identification technology and the industrial application of this technology. Experts and scholars aired their views actively from different perspectives in terms of the R&D of the technology and the prospect of its application. By hosting this conference, JRI hoped to introduce IOT into the local industries, and help extend their horizons into the application of the technology in various industries.

Deputy Director General Xuyan Xu of Foshan Education Bureau was at the conference. He believed that RFID-based IOT technologies can brace Foshan traditional industries for the future transformation, and the home appliances industry to intelligentize. Despite a mature manufacturing, Foshan is short of education resources that provide talents for the industry. Therefore, Foshan, besides improving on her own higher education institutions, has to introduce talents from home and abroad. “With IEEE RFID-TA, more technological elites will notice Shunde.”

The conference touched upon the topics including RFID Antenna Design, RFID Application within IOT, RFID Positioning, Data Processing and RFID Design. Presentations on their papers by scholars from the U. S., Japan, South Korea and China were given respectively in 5 seminar rooms. By the selection and election of the experts’judges, the Best Paper Award went to Dr. Jordy Huiting with University of Twente (The Netherlands) for his paper “The Effects of Single Bit Quantization on Direction of Arrival Estimation of UHF RFID Tags”. SYSU student Miaowang Zeng of Grade 2012 of the School of Electronics and Information Technology won the Best Student Paper Award for his paper “Differential Topology Rectifier Design for Ambient Wireless Energy Harvesting”.

SYSU-CMU Shunde International Joint Research Institute (JRI), is located in the Shunde District of Foshan City in Guangdong Province. With local government and industry support, the JRI will provide an excellent environment for students to research and practice in a collaborative atmosphere. The goal of the JRI is to provide a space for industries, researchers and students to work together. (www.sdjri.com)
