The Congresses of the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS) were successfully organized from July 27 to August 1, 2014 at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, Canada, including the 14th International Congress of Bacteriology and Applied Microbiology, the 14th International Congress of Mycology and Eukaryotic Microbiology and the 16th International Congress of Virology. More than 2,000 researchers and students from all over the world took part in these congresses. IUMS is a world wide organization that represents all clinical scientists and fundamental researchers with interest in microbiology and related diseases, and the congresses bring together the largest, most comprehensive group of microbiology researchers at a single gathering, which is held every three years.

Professor Xi Liyan (Department of Dermatology, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University) and Associate Professor Feng Peiying (Department of Dermatology, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University) were the only two invited Chinese speakers. Prof. Xi is Dr. Feng’s doctoral supervisor; they gave presentations on topics of "Penicillium marneffei infection in mainland China" and "Detection and identification of opportunistic Exophiala species using Rolling Circle Amplification of ribosomal Internal Transcribed Spacers" respectively. There was an open and active discussion among participants focusing on the medical mycology in China, which will promote research, international cooperation and other scientific activities of our university in the coming future.
