2012 SYSU Medical Sciences International Cooperation and Exchange Seminar Successfully Held

On July 6 and 7, the 2012 SYSU Medical Sciences International Cooperation and Exchange Seminar was successfully held. President Xu Ningsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng, Executive Vice President Wang Jianping Vice President Yan Guangmei, Vice President Li Mengfeng, Vice President Wei Minghai, Party secretaries and deans of medical schools, departments and affiliated hospitals, deputy deans in charge of foreign affairs, Party and administrative leaders of related functional departments, and staff engaged in foreign affairs in medical schools and departments, altogether about 80 participants attended the seminar.
Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng reviewed the history of international cooperation and exchange of medical sciences in SYSU. The predecessor of Zhongshan School of Medicine —— Boji Medical School was the first educational institution of Western medicine in China. SYSU medical sciences have a long tradition of international cooperation. He hoped that all medical schools, departments and affiliated hospitals continue the tradition and bring the advantages into full play to vigorously develop international cooperation and exchange.

President Xu Ningsheng pointed out in the concluding remarks that all SYSU medical schools, departments and affiliated hospitals attach great importance to international cooperation and exchange. With high motivation in work, great efforts have been put into the overall promotion, and good achievements have been gained. However, from the macro-level of the university, we should speed up international cooperation and exchange in medical sciences. The university will promote the development of large international collaboration projects, and encourage multi-level international cooperation and exchange. He expressed his hope that all units can make full use of various resources, develop international cooperation projects, meanwhile, emancipate the mind, take initiatives, greatly enhance international cooperation and exchange and the all-round work in medical sciences.
The functional departments of SYSU delivered keynote speeches. Office of International Cooperation & Exchange presented a report on the status quo of international communication in SYSU, the future development plan, and the layout of international cooperation and exchange projects. Office of Medical Science, Dean’s Office of Medical Education, Graduate School of SYSU reported on the internationalization of medical research, medical education and graduate education respectively and analyzed the existing problems. Zhongshan School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Public Health, School of Pharmaceutical Science, Guanghua School (Hospital) of Stomatology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, The Third Affiliated Hospital, The Fifth Affiliated Hospital, The Sixth Affiliated Hospital, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center and SYSU Cancer Center respectively reported on the status quo of international cooperation in the unit and a five-year development plan.

The Seminar
On the morning of July 7, the participants held group discussions on how to enhance international communication in medical sciences. The topics of discussion included: the feasibility and necessity of setting up foreign affairs offices in schools, departments and hospitals with optimum conditions; how to promote medical student exchange and undergraduate student exchange; how to partner with foreign universities and research institutes to develop joint postgraduate programs; how to enhance the construction of international collaborative research platforms for medical sciences, especially the important initiative and proposal to establish SYSU and Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) Joint Clinical Research Center; how to strengthen international communication and cultivation of excellent young scholars and discipline leaders; how to promote international communication of Party and administrative leaders in medical schools, departments and hospitals and absorb advanced management ideas and experience; how to distinctively enhance international cooperation and exchange in different medical schools, departments and hospitals; how to continue the MBBS program for international students with English as medium of instruction; how to join forces of the university, hospitals and schools in international exchange and cooperation; how to use the opportunity of “2011 Collaborative Innovation” to build a system of large-scale foreign affairs and promote international communication in medical sciences. After the discussions, Vice President Yan Guangmei made arrangements for recent foreign affairs work in medical sciences.
The 2012 SYSU Medical Sciences International Cooperation and Exchange Seminar was held with the aim of building a working platform for medical schools, departments and affiliated hospitals to develop communication and cooperation with foreign countries and Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, enhancing connection and communication among different units, summarizing and exchanging experience in international cooperation and exchange, and making concerted efforts to promote international cooperation and exchange in medical sciences in our university.
