The Third East Campus “Eight Schools & Departments” Debate Contest Comes to a Successful Conclusion

The farewell match of the third East Campus “Eight Schools & Departments” debate contest of SYSU was held on East Campus on June 7th, which signified the successful conclusion of the debate contest. The would be graduates of 2005 were having a good time in debating and exchanging experience with debating enthusiasts.

In the contest, 16 teams were divided into 4 groups in the first round, and 4 winning teams came to the semi-final. Department of Philosophy and School of Mathematics & Computational Science competed in the final on May 24th, generating a heated discussion on “University education-- elite or mass education?” Finally， School of Mathematics & Computational Science got the first place and Sun Mengdi, student of Department of Philosophy, was awarded “best debater” with his precise and trenchant conclusion of the debate. The debating topics of the debate contest involved some of the controversial issues such as “second birth”, "medical reform” and “lights out for an hour”. It lasted for more than a month, involving nearly 160 debaters in the discussion, analysis and thinking on the topics.

The East Campus “Eight Schools & Departments” debate contest, held in the second semester of each academic year, is a big game in SYSU and of great significance in terms of fostering the students’ critical thinking skills and inheriting the excellent tradition of debating.

This debate contest was co-organized by the Student Unions of School of Environmental Science and Engineering and Department of Philosophy.
