New Breakthroughs for SYSU in the American Mathematical Modeling Contest
A thrilling News has been heard from the American mathematical modeling contest: the team composed of Lin Xiaowei, Chang Mingli, and Xu Wenhao, (Coach: Prof. Yuan Zhuojian) has gotten the Finalist. A total of 2245 teams from the united states, Germany, Britain, China, and other 9 countries and regions, in addition to 356 teams have participated in the interdisciplinary mathematical modeling contest, with only less than 1% of receiving the outstanding award and the Finalist. SYSU is one of the five teams from china to receive the awards (the other four are teams from Zhejiang University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Beijing University, Zhejiang University of Commerce and Industry respectively). In addition, 18 teams have been organized by our school to participant in this mathematical modeling contest. During the winter break, the team members received intensive trainings and simulated practicum in knowledge, skills, essay writing and so on. God helps those who help themselves. under the guidance of their mentor, the team members had prepared themselves thoroughly and played hard, finally received the best score ever since our school has taken part in the American contests, which is also the highest award the students have received in Guangdong since their first participation in the America mathematical modeling contest.
The contest problems for the annual contest of American Mathematical Modeling Contest are downloaded from the websites of the United States, the contesters will be asked to tocomplete within 4 days an English written report which will cover a summary of model hypothesis, the construction of mathematical model, calculation methods, design and implementation, result analysis and verification, model extension and improvement of the content of the paper. The contest is indeed a great challenge for undergraduates, who, in addition to a thorough understanding of the contest problems, must consult a variety of written sources in Chinese, and particularly in English, work cooperatively with a division of labor, utilize their comprehensive mathematical science knowledge, and exert their intelligence and abilities in order to excel. Both the Chinese Mathematical Modeling Contest and the American Mathematical Modeling Contest play important roles in improving overall quality of students, and to train Innovation Competition of students and skills of teamwork, and a command of computer knowledge.
