It was a touching moment on July 1, the last day of the graduation ceremony in SYSU when President Xu Ningsheng sent his best wishes to married graduates and took a group photo with them.
After conferring doctorate on China’s first batch of graduates of an 8-year Doctor of Medicine program in SYSU, President Xu remarked: “All great masters are virtuous. One cannot become a master if he or she only has ability. You will engage in the practice of medicine, remember that a doctor should have a parent’s heart, a doctor should be kind-hearted, and a doctor should have both medical competence and moral integrity.”
Then, he began to make fun of these students: “Eight year is a long time, haven’t you done anything else besides study? Have you fallen in love? How many of you have found your partner? I heard that two couples have already got married.”
"Those who are married stand up; those who are in love yet not married stand up, too.” Hardly had his voice faded away, a crowd of students stood up and the whole audience burst into cheers.
"You have made a great achievement. I hope your children will come to study in SYSU.” President Xu invited all the married students and those who have found their partner in SYSU to take a photo together.
It is learned that Sun Yat-sen University is one of a few universities that are qualified to enroll students in an 8-year medical education program approved by the Ministry of Education. The annual intake of such students in each qualified university is not more than 100.
