The graduation season of Sun Yat-sen University officially started on June 19. The schools and affiliated hospitals held postgraduate graduation ceremonies and degree ceremonies successively. The 2019 graduates of SYSU will keep Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s words in mind — “for the welfare of the society and for the glory of the country”, serve the country, and strive to realize the Chinese dream.

Boya (Liberal Arts) College
On the morning of June 22, the Boya (Liberal Arts) College held the 2019 graduation ceremony and the 2019 postgraduate degree ceremony in the Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. The school leadership, teachers and students attended the ceremony. The organizer also invited Professor Gan Yang, Founding Dean of the Boya (Liberal Arts) College and now Dean of the Xinya College of Tsinghua University; Ms. Hao Yajuan, former Secretary of the Boya (Liberal Arts) College and now Secretary of the School of Physics and Astronomy; Professor Zhang Wei, Director of the Department of Philosophy; Professor Wu Tao, Director of the Department of History (Zhuhai); Professor Li Fajun from the School of Sociology and Anthropology; and Professor Long Li, Deputy Director of the Museum of Sun Yat-sen University. The ceremony was hosted by 2015 undergraduate student He Shuzhi. Associate Professor Wu Hai, students Xu Xiaoqing and Liang Zhong, Ms. Cao Xiuyu, and Mr. Wu Wenbin gave a speech, representing supervisors, graduates, parents and alumni respectively.

Ms. Long Bo, Secretary of the Boya (Liberal Arts) College, read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and announced the University’s decision to confer master’s and doctoral degrees. Professor Xie Shi, Dean of the Boya (Liberal Arts) College, presented the degree certificate to the graduates, shook hands with them and turned the tassel for them. Professor Gan Yang delivered a speech, in which he affirmed the achievements of the College.

Dean Xie Shi said that Boya (Liberal Arts) College has always kept in mind the fundamental mission of higher education and the expectations of the country and the society. He hoped that the graduates would treat the College as their home, be accompanied by poems and books, not be complacent about achievements, nor be held back by difficulties.
School of Physics
On the morning of June 22, the School of Physics held the 2019 postgraduate graduation ceremony and degree ceremony. 17 supervisor representatives including Professor Zhou Jianying, Director of the School’s Academic Committee, and Professor Zheng Yue, Dean of the School of Physics, as well as 33 master’s and doctoral graduates attended the degree ceremony. Professor Dong Jianwen presided over the ceremony, Professor Zhou Jianying announced the University’s decision to confer master’s and doctoral degrees. Professor Yao Daoxin announced the decision to commend the winners of outstanding postgraduate dissertations.

Dean Zheng Yue read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and presented the degree certificates to the master’s degree recipients. He encouraged the students to become pillars of the country, and become leaders in their fields in the future.

The supervisor representative Professor Zhong Dingyong said that graduation is the starting point of a new journey. The students should keep the university motto in mind and step into a broader arena.

The student representative Zhang Linquan thanked the professors, administrative staff and supervisors for their dedication to education. In the School of Physics, the students have not only grasped knowledge but also established friendship. After the ceremony, the supervisors and students had a tea break and took photos together.
Department of History
On the morning of June 22, the Department of History held the 2019 graduation ceremony and the postgraduate degree ceremony in the Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. The school’s leadership, supervisor representatives, alumni representatives, the 2019 graduates and their parents attended the ceremony and witnessed the happy moment.

Before the ceremony started, the big screen displayed a graduation video produced by the graduates, showing unforgettable moments of their study and life at the Department of History.

At the ceremony, Ms. Long Bo, Secretary of the Department of History, read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and announced the university’s decision to confer master’s and doctoral degrees. Professor Xie Shi, Director of the Department of History turned the tassel for every master’s and doctoral degree recipient. Professor Xie Shi, together with Professor Jiang Yinghe, Professor Paul A. Van Dyke and Professor Guan Xiaohong, presented certificates to the undergraduates. Professor Wu Yixiong, students Wang Shutong and Li Zhengyi gave a speech on behalf of the supervisors, postgraduates and undergraduates respectively.

Professor Xie Shi shared his story when he graduated with his PhD degree ten years ago. He told the students to be rigorous and calm in dealing with things. He also stressed the important habit of reading, thinking and writing in this rapid changing era. He hoped that the graduates would have a grateful heart, and make contributions to the country and the society.
Sun Yat-sen Business School
On the afternoon of June 22, Sun Yat-sen Business School held the 2019 postgraduate graduation ceremony and the 2019 degree ceremony in the K.K. Leung Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. SYSU Vice President Li Shanmin, the School’s Dean Wang Fan, Secretary Qi Xiaoping, Deputy Deans Liu Jingyan, Li Guangzhong and Zheng Guojian, Deputy Secretary Zhou Jing, supervisor representatives, over 600 master’s and doctoral degree recipients, as well as relatives and friends of the graduates attended the ceremony. Deputy Dean Liu Jingyan presided over the ceremony. Shao Xiao and Chen Shaona gave a speech on behalf of doctoral graduates and master’s graduates respectively.
Deputy Dean Liu Jingyan announced the university’s decision on conferring master’s and doctoral degrees. Dean Wang Fan turned the tassel for the student and presented the graduation booklets. The doctoral graduates presented flowers to the supervisors and the dean, and took photos. The officiating professors and the graduates’ friends and relatives witnessed the exciting moment.
Dean Wang Fan extended heartfelt congratulations to the graduates on behalf of the School. He stressed the idea of cooperation and progress, and he told the graduates to shoulder more important missions and tasks, to link individual value with the country’s development, and make more contributions to the country, society and people.

School of Government
On the morning of June 23, the School of Government held the 2019 postgraduate graduation ceremony and the 2019 degree ceremony in the Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. 19 officiating professors including Professor Xia Shuzhang, Honorary Dean of the School of Government, Professor Ma Jun, Deputy Secretary and Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Xiao Bin, Secretary of the School of Government, and Professor Tan Ankui, Dean of the School of Government, attended the ceremony. Teacher and student representatives, together with 395 graduates and over 200 family members and friends, witnessed the solemn and warm moment. The ceremony was presided over by Professor Liu Junqiang, Deputy Dean of the School of Government.
Dean Tan Ankui delivered a speech on behalf of the School. He expressed three expectations for the graduates: firstly, the graduates should apply scientific methods and values of the School to properly deal with the relations between the self, the family, the country and the world; secondly, the graduates should not be blinded by fame and gain, should remain in awe of academic study and enjoy pure academic research; thirdly, MPA students and graduates who are about to enter public departments should practice the School’s goal of good governance.

The supervisor representative Associate Professor Lian Hong gave a speech. He stressed that high quality academic research is important for teaching at the School, and reiterated the significance of research questions, theoretical application and methodology for academic research. He also hoped that the graduates would be cautious, optimistic and focused in their journey to the future.

The graduate representative Xiao Diwen presented flower to Professor Xia Shuzhang and gave a speech. He thanked the teachers of the School of Government on behalf of the graduates, and expressed the determination to remain true to the original aspirations and forge ahead. Afterwards, Mr. Umaru Jabbie gave a speech on behalf of the IMPA graduates.
School of Atmospheric Sciences
On the afternoon of June 23, the School of Atmospheric Sciences held the 2019 postgraduate degree ceremony in the Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. The School’s Dean Dong Wenjie, Secretary Zhang Sihong, Deputy Dean Yang Song, Assistant Dean Chen Guixing, supervisor representatives, some teachers and parents were invited to attend the ceremony. Secretary Zhang Sihong presided over the ceremony.

Secretary Zhang Sihong introduced the officiating professors, guests and teachers, and showed the congratulatory words to the 2019 graduates from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Typhoon Committee. Professor Yang Song gave a speech as the supervisor representative, PhD student Cai Mingfu, and master’s student Zhao Yangjie gave a speech respectively as the graduate representative.

Professor Yang Song hoped that the graduates would aim high and make contributions to the society and the country. He told them not to be eager about instant success and quick profits; be diligent; and be broad-minded.

Dean Dong Wenjie announced the university’s decision to confer master’s and doctoral degrees, and expressed his sincere wish for all graduates. 9 students received their master’s degrees, and 8 students received their doctoral degrees.

Accompanied by the song of “High Mountain and Long River”, the graduates went onto the stage one by one. The dean and supervisors turned the tassel for the graduates. The graduates presented flowers to the dean and the supervisors to express their gratitude. The solemn and warm atmosphere touched everyone at the ceremony.
