The graduation season of Sun Yat-sen University officially started on June 19. The schools and affiliated hospitals held postgraduate graduation ceremonies and degree ceremonies successively. The professors read Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s graduation precept — “for the welfare of the society, for the glory of the country”, expressed their expectations, and taught the last lesson to the students before their graduation.

School of Biomedical Engineering
On the morning of June 20, the School of Biomedical Engineering held the 2019 graduation ceremony and the postgraduate degree ceremony in B101 Lecture Hall of the Administration Building on Guangzhou East Campus. The School’s Secretary Chen Huagui, Deputy Dean Zhang Chao, supervisor representatives, the 2019 graduates and their family members witnessed the unforgettable moment. The ceremony was presided over by Secretary Chen Huagui.

Before the ceremony, a video of the students’ graduation reflections was played to warm up the atmosphere. The graduation ceremony officially started with the solemn national anthem. Secretary Chen Huagui read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and all graduates replied “obey your instructions”.

Afterwords, Secretary Chen Huagui announced the university’s decision of conferring doctoral and master’s degrees, and invited the supervisors to present the degree certificates to the recipients. The graduates went onto the stage in turn to accept their degrees and take photos with the supervisors.

After the degree ceremony, Deputy Dean Zhang Chao gave a speech. He extended congratulations and expressed expectations to the graduates. He hoped the students would have teamwork spirit, make adequate preparations and work hard. While having a long-term vision, they should be down-to-earth in fulfilling every task.

Professor Song Rong gave a speech as the supervisor representative. He reviewed the development of biomedical engineering at SYSU, and depicted a blueprint for the discipline. He hoped the graduates could keep their enthusiasm for research, keep studying and surpass themselves.

Secretary Chen Huagui said to the graduates to cherish experience, to learn from others, from books and from the society, and help others to succeed.

Department of Psychology
On the afternoon of June 20, the Department of Psychology held the graduation ceremony and the 2019 postgraduate degree ceremony in the Administration Building on Guangzhou East Campus. The department leadership, faculty and staff, the master’s and doctoral graduates, as well as their friends and relatives attended the ceremony.

After singing the national anthem, the Department’s Deputy Director Pan Junhao read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and announced the university’s decision of conferring master’s and doctoral degrees. The graduates went onto the stage in turn and received the degree certificates from Professor Gao Dingguo, Director of the Department of Psychology.
At the ceremony, the Department’s Secretary Li Hua delivered a speech. She extended warm congratulations and expressed four expectations for the graduates: first, pay more attention to the process of pursuing happiness; second, step into their career with a more resilient heart; third, cultivate the ability to transform thinking; and fourth, have the eagerness to serve our country.

The teacher representative Associate Professor Dai Zhengjia also gave a speech. She shared her experience and thoughts after she graduated with a Ph.D degree, and put forward some suggestions for the graduates.

School of Chemistry
On the morning of June 24, the School of Chemistry held the 2019 postgraduate graduation ceremony and degree ceremony in A101 of Fong Shing Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. The school leadership, supervisor representatives, and the 2019 master’s and doctoral graduates attended the ceremony. Assistant Dean Wu Dingcai presided over the ceremony.

The ceremony started with the solemn national anthem. The School’s Secretary Chen Wenbo read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and all graduates replied “obey the instructions”.

Dean Su Chengyong announced the university’s decision to confer master’s and doctoral degrees, and delivered a speech on behalf of the School. He extended congratulations and expressed four expectations for the graduates: first, aim high as a postgraduate; second, be warm-hearted as a chemistry student; have manners as a member of SYSU; and fourth, be strong as a Chinese.

The graduates went onto the stage in turn. Dean Su Chengyong turned the tassel for the degree recipient, presented the graduation booklet, shook hands and took a photo with every graduate.

The supervisor representative Academician Ji Liangnian delivered a speech. He reviewed his own experience of supervising postgraduate students in the past 30-plus years. He hoped the graduates would put improving their moral qualities at the first place, treat others with love, be strict with themselves, and become pillars of the country in the future.

School of Electronics and Information Technology
On the morning of June 24, the School of Electronics and Information Technology held the 2019 postgraduate graduation ceremony and degree ceremony in the Microelectronics Building on Guangzhou East Campus.

The graduation ceremony started with the solemn national anthem. The School’s Secretary Mo Hua read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, all graduates stood up and replied “obey the instructions”.

Deputy Dean Chen Dihu announced the university’s decision of conferring master’s and doctoral degrees. The graduates went onto the stage in turn. The supervisors turned the tassels for the graduates. Dean Deng Shaozhi presented the degree certificates, and took photos with the graduates to record the unforgettable moment.

Dean Deng Shaozhi extended warm congratulations to the graduates, and thanked the teachers as well as the relatives and friends of the graduates. She expressed three expectations for the students: first, aim high and keep the enthusiasm of exploration; second, cultivate oneself and keep a simple heart; third, share weal and woe and cherish the friendship.

The supervisor representative Professor Chen Jun gave a speech. He extended congratulations, expressed best wishes, and encouraged the graduates to innovate and serve the country.

During the graduation ceremony, the School set up a photo-taking wall for the students to record the beautiful moment. After the ceremony at the dinner party, the students sang “The Mountain is High and the River is Long” to express their lover for the alma mater; some graduates recited a poem to express their affection for the SYSU campus.
 
School of Information Management
On the morning of June 24, the School of Information Management held the 2019 graduation ceremony and the postgraduate degree ceremony in the Administration Building on Guangzhou East Campus. The school leadership, teacher representatives, the 2019 graduates and some friends and relatives, a total of more than 400 people attended the ceremony. The School’s Deputy Dean Chen Dingquan presided over the ceremony.

The first item on the agenda was to welcome the Sun Yat-sen University Flag and the School of Information Management Flag. The supervisor representatives took their seats on the stage. All rose and sang the national anthem.

Deputy Dean Chen Dingquan read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, all graduates replied “obey the instructions”. Dean Miguel Nunes turned the tassel for every master’s and doctoral degree recipient, presented them with graduation booklets, shook hands and took photos.
In his speech, Dean Miguel Nunes hoped the graduates would keep in touch with the School of Information Management, because the School needs their friendship, support and sponsorship in the future. He said that the discipline of information is one of the fastest growing and developing in the information society we live in today. Never before were information professionals so needed and in demand. The graduates should be proud of their education and their discipline. No information, no life!

The supervisor representative Professor Cao Shujin gave a speech and expressed three expectations for the graduates: first, aim high, be confident and unyielding; be down-to-earth and do everything seriously; third, be prudent, modest and friendly.

In order to commend the outstanding performance of the students in different fields, the ceremony also arranged an award session for the “Information Talent”.
School of Marxism
On the morning of June 24, the School of Marxism held the 2019 postgraduate graduation ceremony and degree ceremony in the Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. The School’s Dean Lin Jinping, Secretary Zheng Zhe, members of the Education and Degree Committee, supervisor representatives, the 2019 postgraduate students and their friends and relatives attended the ceremony. Deputy Dean Long Bolin presided over the ceremony.
The graduation ceremony started with the solemn national anthem. Deputy Dean Long Bolin read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, all graduates stood up and replied “obey the instructions”. Then, Deputy Dean Long Bolin announced the university’s decision of conferring doctoral and master’s degrees.

Dean Lin Jinping conferred degrees to the graduates. 52 postgraduate students with their degree gowns went onto the stage in turn. Dean Lin Jinping shook hands, turned the tassel, presented a graduation plaque and took a photo with every graduate.

Professor Wu Yulin gave a speech as the teacher representative. He hoped the graduates would put themselves in the right place, start fresh, learn from others, and learn through practice. Keep learning and gain practical wisdom. Learn to be a better person, to do things and to cooperate.

On behalf of the School, Dean Lin Jinping extended congratulations to the graduates, and expressed gratitude to the graduates’ relatives and teachers. He shared his reflections with the graduates: be broad-minded, assume responsibilities, and develop abilities.

The whole ceremony kept the tradition of the university’s degree ceremony while adding characteristics of the School. The School prepared a graduation plaque with the name and student number of every graduate. The School also developed a WeChat mini program to live broadcast photos of the ceremony, and the students could download their own graduation photos into their mobile phones.

School of Life Sciences
On the morning of June 24, the School of Life Sciences held the 2019 postgraduate graduation ceremony and degree ceremony in the No. 3 Teaching Building on Guangzhou South Campus. 26 officiating professors including Professor Lin Haoran, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Zheng Limin, Dean of the School of Life Sciences, and Professor Zhao Yong, Secretary of the School of Life Sciences, all graduates and their relatives and friends, a total of more than 400 people attended the ceremony. Secretary Zhao Yong presided over the ceremony.

Dean Zheng Limin delivered a speech, and expressed his expectations for the graduates: first, have big ambitions; second, be inclusive and cooperative; third, be down-to-earth and walk the talk. Finally, he hoped the students would aim high, make unremitting efforts, strive to become pillars of the nation, and make more contributions to the society.

Secretary Zhao Yong announced the university’s decision to confer doctoral and master’s degrees. Dean Zheng Limin conferred degrees. He turned the tassel, presented a graduation booklet and shook hands with every graduate.

Academician Lin Haoran delivered a speech as the supervisor representative. He reviewed the experience of insisting on study and grasping the opportunities. He encouraged the students to keep a healthy mind and a healthy body, keep striving forward, keep the habit of life-long learning, work hard to realize their ideals, and make contributions to the country and the society.

School of Mathematics
On the afternoon of June 24, the School of Mathematics held the 2019 postgraduate graduation ceremony and the 2019 degree ceremony in the Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. The School’s Dean Chen Binglong, Secretary Hao Dengfeng, Deputy Dean Guo Xianping and Deputy Dean Xian Jun attended the ceremony. The School’s Deputy Secretary Zhang Xianghong presided over the ceremony. Supervisor representatives as well as relatives and friends of the graduates witnessed the important and unforgettable moment.

At the ceremony, Secretary Hao Dengfeng led the graduates to recite the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and encouraged every student to study “for the welfare of the society, for the glory of the country”.

On behalf of all faculty and staff of the School, Dean Chen Binglong extended congratulations to the graduates and expressed gratitude to their parents. He said that our country attaches great importance to basic research, and mathematics is the basic of basic science. Every graduate should grasp the pulse of the new era, and strive forward in their journey of pursuing the dream of mathematics and science.

Institute of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Development Studies (The Center for Studies of Hong Kong, Macao and Pearl River Delta)
On the afternoon of June 24, the Institute of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Development Studies (The Center for Studies of Hong Kong, Macao and Pearl River Delta) held the 2019 graduation ceremony and degree ceremony in 624 Lecture Hall of the Humanities Building on Guangzhou South Campus. Teacher representatives, the 2019 graduates as well as their friends and relatives attended the ceremony. Professor Guo Tianwu, Deputy Dean of the Institute and Deputy Director of the Center, presided over the ceremony.

The degree ceremony started with the solemn national anthem. Deputy Dean Guo Tianwu read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, all graduatesreplied “obey the instructions”.

Deputy Dean Guo Tianwu announced the university’s decision of conferring doctoral and master’s degrees. Executive Deputy Dean He Junzhi conferred degrees. The graduates in caps and gowns went onto the stage in turn. Executive Deputy Dean He Junzhi shook hands with the graduates, turned the tassels, and presented the graduation booklets.

Executive Deputy Dean He Junzhi gave a speech. He stated the reason for choosing the 624 Lecture Hall of the Humanities Building as the site for the graduation ceremony, and suggested “Humanities Building 624” as the code for the 2019 graduates to show the Institute’s best wishes for them. He hoped the graduates would be upright, inclusive and serve the country and the people.

Professor Chen Guanghan gave a speech on behalf of the supervisors. He told the graduates who were about to step into the society that work is a choice, and career shows one’s abilities. If they develop their work into a lifetime career, they will realize the value of life.

Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital
On the afternoon of June 24, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital held the 2019 postgraduate graduation ceremony and degree ceremony in the Haizhu Hall of Lingnan Building at the hospital. The hospital leadership, officiating professors, directors of various departments, supervisor representatives and all graduates attended the ceremony. Vice-President of the Hospital Professor Yan Li presided over the ceremony.

Professor Yan Li read the graduation precept written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and announced the university’s decision of conferring doctoral and master’s degrees.

Secretary of the Hospital Professor Wang Jingfeng delivered a speech. He said that health related and life entrusted is the oath of a medical student, and also the glory of a medical worker. He hoped the students would carry forward the spirit in the hospital motto, and leave a colorful mark in the scroll of life.

Afterwards, President of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital Professor Song Erwei presented the degree certificate to every master’s and doctoral degree recipient and took photos with them.

Professor Jiang Shanping gave a speech as the supervisor representative. He said that the tomorrow of the students would be the future of the Hospital, and he believed that the students would bring honor to the Hospital.

Never forget why you started, and your mission can be accomplished. When Professor Yan Li led the students to recite the oath of a medical student, the students expressed their determinations.
