Strengthening International Collaboration in Science and Technology to Build More Open Universities

On October 13, the China-US University Presidents’ Online Forum was held under the theme of “Fostering More Open, Integrative and Resilient Universities”, bringing together presidents of 20 Chinese and American universities to explore the development of higher education.
Chinese Vice Premier Sun Chunlan delivered remarks via video for this important event for China-US cultural exchanges. President Luo Jun of Sun Yat-sen University attended the forum and delivered a keynote speech at invitation.

In his speech titled “Strengthening International Collaboration in Science and Technology to Build More Open Universities”, President Luo Jun mentioned that Sun Yat-sen University aims to build itself into a university that is comprehensive, research-oriented, and open, following the universal path of how first-class universities develop in the world. “Strengthening international cooperation in science and technology is one of our most important strategies”, he added.
President Luo highlighted the progress of three major research cooperation platforms of Sun Yat-sen University. Among them, Tianqin Project designed to detect gravitational wave in space has been successfully proceeding to the second step. China’s largest oceanographic research vessel—Zhong Shan Da Xue will set off on its maiden voyage next year, which will serve as a multidisciplinary and multifunctional research platform and a talent training base. The National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou has yielded a large number of high-level application results, including efficient and easy-to-use multidisciplinary software integrating supercomputer big data and artificial intelligence. “Sun Yat-sen University is willing to share technological platforms with global universities to facilitate cutting-edge scientific research, the progress of major projects and the development of strategic industries”, President Luo said.
In recent years, Sun Yat-sen University has conducted substantive cooperation and exchanges with well-known American universities. It has signed cooperation agreements with 36 top American universities, including the University of Chicago, University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Davis, etc.
Schools and affiliated hospitals of the university have carried out substantial cooperation on research and teaching with Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University, National Institutes of Health, Texas Medical Center, etc.
Under the new international situation, Sun Yat-sen University will promote deeper, broader and more pragmatic exchanges and cooperation with world-class universities and research institutions in a more innovative manner.
This Forum, jointly organized by Tsinghua University and Yale University, is attended by presidents of Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Sun Yat-sen University, Macau University, Yale University, Cornell University, Columbia University, Washington University in St. Louis and other well-known universities.
