"Globalization of Research-orientated Universities: Opportunities and Challenges " International Academic Seminar Held at SYSU

Co-sponsored by Sun Yat-sen University, Peking University, Columbia University and the Lingnan Foundation of the United States, an International academic seminar on the "Globalization of Research-orientated Universities: Opportunities and Challenges" was held at SYSU from November 20th to 22th. More than presidents and experts from prestigious universities at home and abroad attended the seminar, including York University of Canada, University of Sydney Australia, University of Minnesota, University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiaotong University. Meanwhile, Prof Zhou Yuanqing, Chairman of Higher Education Society of China and former Vice-minister of Ministry of National Education, Prof Pan Maoyuan, Consultant of Higher Education Society of China, and Prof Yang Deguang, Vice-chairman of Higher Education Society of China, as well as Huang Daren, president of SYSU and Li Ping, Deputy secretary of Party Committee were invited to attended the seminar.

The seminar aimed to exchange views on the experience of development of globalization at research-orientated universities, to explore the law of evaluation of the globalization of higher education, in order to make contribution to promoting the construction of high-standard universities in China. Experts talked openly surrounding the theme of the seminar, sharing many insightful views. They maintained that in the face of various opportunities and challenges through out the course of globalization, universities should therefore be highly aware of the globalization development by adopting a globalize vision in the process of teaching and learning and maintaining good relationships between the conflicts and amalgamation of the culture as well as globalization and localization; maintaining relationships of cross-border globalization and domestic or campus globalization. In addition, attention should be paid to creating a global academic atmosphere, making use of international resources, linking globalize development of universities with regional economic integration and cultivation of innovative talents.

This seminar was the fruit of international communication and cooperation of higher education, which was resulted from a collision of respective thoughts from China and West, with an equal emphasis on theory and practice. It not only made contributions to the quests of theory and practice of globalization for higher education world wide, but also provided useful experience for the international development of research institutes and universities of other types.
