SYSU holds 2019 International Young Scholars Zhuhai Forum

From May 31 to June 2, 2019, the 8th International Young Scholars Forum and the 2019 International Young Scholars Zhuhai Forum of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) was held. Through the plenary meeting, sub-forums and academic exchanges, the Forum brought together outstanding young scholars to experience SYSU’s culture and witness SYSU’s development.

On the morning of June 1, the plenary meeting was held. Mr. Yao Yisheng, Mayor of Zhuhai; Mr. Yan Wu, Vice Mayor of Zhuhai; Professor Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee; Academician Luo Jun, President of SYSU; Chinese Academy of Sciences members Zhang Peizhen, Gao Rui and Chen Dake, Chinese Academy of Engineering member Wang Fuming; SYSU Vice President Wang Xuehua; SYSU Assistant President Liu Jike; young scholars from home and abroad, professors and doctors of SYSU’s schools, departments and affiliated hospitals, a total of over 500 people attended the meeting.

Secretary Chen Chunsheng presided over the plenary meeting and delivered opening remarks.
 
At the meeting, Secretary Chen Chunsheng extended a warm welcome to the young scholars and expressed sincere gratitude to the CPC Zhuhai Municipal Committee and Zhuhai Municipal Government for their strong support for SYSU over the years. He said that Zhuhai Campus is an important pivot for the realization of SYSU’s strategic goal of “being rooted in China, accelerating its advancement into the first tier of universities nationwide and forging ahead to enter the forefront of world-class universities”. He believed that in the near future, Zhuhai Campus will accelerate its construction into a coastal campus with Chinese characteristics, top level institutional management and wide-ranging global impact.

Mayor Yao Yisheng extended sincere congratulations on the forum and warm welcome to the young scholars. He said that Zhuhai takes the historic opportunity of building the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, strives to build an important hub for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, a core city on the west bank at the mouth of the Pearl River, and a model of high-quality development along the coastal economic belt. Zhuhai makes full efforts to nurture an environment for talent development through all-round and precise policy support as well as continuous and multiple channels of talent introduction. Talent has become a core driving force to lead Zhuhai’s innovation and development, and a “talent highland” is taking form where various talents can give full play to their creativity. Mayor Yao Yisheng hoped that the excellent young scholars present at the forum would choose to settle in Zhuhai and achieve their career success.

President Luo Jun delivered a keynote report entitled “Join Hands in the New Journey, Create a New Future Together”, in which he introduced the history, culture and recent development of SYSU, and the development and planning of Zhuhai Campus.

President Luo Jun pointed out that since its establishment, SYSU is a comprehensive university where humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medical sciences, agricultural sciences and engineering develop comprehensively in the pursuit of excellence. As Dr. Sun Yat-sen said, the university is aimed at “being first-class nationwide, and not falling behind in the world”. 95 years of historical inheritance including evolution and development, relocation and expansion, academic context, values and pursuits, distinguished scholars and their stories, have forged SYSU’s spirit of patriotic, open, innovative and outstanding, which is an important inner driving force for SYSU’s development in the new era.

President Luo Jun stressed that upholding overall Party leadership is the fundamental guarantee for SYSU’s development in the recent five years. SYSU shoulders the mission of nurturing a new generation of capable young people who have a good and all-round moral, intellectual, physical, and aesthetical grounding and are well-prepared to join the socialist cause. We must uphold the correct political direction and meet the fundamental requirement of “four services”. We will build SYSU into a world-class university with Chinese characteristics. It is the largest Chinese characteristics and the most fundamental first-class characteristics to uphold Party leadership, adhere to the socialist direction, foster virtue through education, and nurture a new generation of capable young people who are well-prepared to join the socialist cause.

President Luo Jun introduced the positioning, scale, disciplinary layout, research platforms and campus construction of Zhuhai Campus. We will first build a complete disciplinary development system and talent cultivation system. Our goal is to build a coastal campus with Chinese characteristics and top level institutional management, to serve the national marine power strategy, space science strategy, the “Belt and Road” Initiative, and to serve the national and local in-depth implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy.

President Luo Jun also expressed warm invitations to the outstanding young scholars present at the forum, noting that SYSU will provide strong platforms and resources to achieve academic ambitions and career dreams. He invited them to join SYSU, make efforts to achieve success, strive forward to create a better tomorrow for SYSU together!

Representatives of the school deans and professors from Zhuhai Campus also presented speeches at the meeting. Academician Wang Fuming, Dean of the School of Civil Engineering; Academician Chen Dake, Director of the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Provincial Laboratory (Zhuhai); Professor Tu Liangcheng, Executive Deputy Director of the Tianqin Research Center for Gravitational Physics; and Professor Huang Xinfei, Dean of the International School of Business & Finance, introduced the goals, opportunities and development of academic disciplines and school construction.

During the Zhuhai Forum, the schools, departments and affiliated hospitals also held sub-forums and academic seminars. Nearly 800 young scholars from around the world applied for the forum, and invitations were sent after selection by academic organizations. Over 400 participants came from renowned universities at home and abroad, and many of them have expressed their intention to join SYSU before the forum.
