SYSU holds the Second Session of the 9th Faculty and Staff Representative Congress & 20th Faculty and Staff Union Representative Assembly

On the morning of January 17, 2018, the Second Session of the 9th Faculty and Staff Representative Congress and the 20th Faculty and Staff Union Representative Assembly of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) was held in K.K. Leung Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. Secretary Chen Chunsheng, President Luo Jun, Executive Vice President Sun Dongbai, Vice Presidents Li Mengfeng, Li Shanmin, Zhu Xiping and Yang Qinghua, as well as over 380 official representatives and observer-representatives from 54 delegations attended the meeting, which was presided over by Deputy Secretary and Chairman of Faculty and Staff Union Yu Minbin.

At the meeting, the representatives listened to the University Work Report delivered by President Luo Jun, the University Financial Work Report delivered by Vice President Li Shanmin, the University “Double First-Class” Construction Work Report delivered by Assistant President Liu Jike, the Background and Approach to Deepening the University Comprehensive Reform delivered by Assistant President Zhao Yong, and the Work Report on SYSU Faculty and Staff Union & Faculty and Staff Representative Congress delivered by Deputy Secretary Yu Minbin.

President Luo Jun introduced the University’s development and achievements in 2017 from nine aspects, including campus layout, talent cultivation, faculty development, disciplinary construction, scientific research and social service, campus construction and public services, cultural construction and development environment construction, internal governance structure, Party building and ideological and political construction. He made arrangements for the University’s key tasks in 2018, and encouraged all faculty and staff to study and implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as well as the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress, implement the strategic arrangements of SYSU’s 13th Congress of Party Representatives, be firmly rooted in China, accelerate advancement into the first tier of universities nationwide, and forge ahead to enter the forefront of world-class universities.

Deputy Secretary Yu Minbin reviewed the work of SYSU Faculty and Staff Union & Faculty and Staff Representative Congress in 2017. He noted that in 2018 the Faculty and Staff Union will provide strong support for the University’s reform and development as well as the "double first-class” construction.

Secretary Chen Chunsheng delivered concluding remarks. He asked the representatives to discuss the various work reports and put forward constructive suggestions. He expressed the hope that SYSU Faculty and Staff Union & Faculty and Staff Representative Congress will hold high the banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, unite all faculty and staff to make continuous efforts to build a world-class university with Chinese characteristics and to enter the forefront of world-class universities.

At the meeting, the university leaders also presented the “Excellent Proposal Award” to SYSU’s Fifth Affiliated Hospital and Huang Mingming from the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, the “Advanced Unit for Implementing Proposals Award” to the Office of Development and Planning, the 2014-2016 “Model Faculty and Staff Home Award” and the “Advanced Faculty and Staff Home Award” to the winners.
