SYSU Holds Third International Young Scholars Zhuhai Forum

On June 16-18, 2017, the Third International Young Scholars Zhuhai Forum was held in Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Through the plenary meeting, sub-forums of schools and departments, and academic exchanges between young scholars, the forum served as a gathering place for talents and their combined experience and wisdom.

On the morning of June 17, the plenary meeting of the forum was held on SYSU’s Zhuhai Campus. Mr. Yan Wu, Vice Mayor of Zhuhai; Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee; Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU; Dr. Luo Teng, Assistant President of SYSU; Chinese Academy of Sciences members Zhang Peizhen and Gao Rui; young scholars from overseas; and representatives from schools and functional departments attended the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Secretary Chen Chunsheng.

Secretary Chen Chunsheng extended a warm welcome to the young scholars from around the world. He expressed sincere gratitude to Zhuhai City for its strong support for SYSU over the years. Since SYSU and Zhuhai Municipal People’s Government signed an agreement on a new type of strategic cooperation in 2015, the close cooperation between the University and the City has greatly promoted the construction and development of Zhuhai Campus. The International Young Scholars Zhuhai Forum has become an important platform for talent introduction. Secretary Chen Chunsheng expressed his hope that the young scholars could take this opportunity to discuss academic issues in their research fields, and make suggestions for Zhuhai City and Zhuhai Campus.

Vice Mayor Yan Wu extended congratulations and well wishes to the forum. He pointed out that Zhuhai is a strategic port in the "Maritime Silk Road”, and plays an important role in the national marine strategy, the “Belt and Road” initiative, the space science strategy, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area planning. In recent years, Zhuhai has implemented its high-level talent scheme, and SYSU International Young Scholars Zhuhai Forum has attracted many outstanding talents for Zhuhai City. He sincerely invited the participants to bring more talents to Zhuhai; meanwhile, Zhuhai has committed to providing better services and better conditions for the development of various kinds of talents.

President Luo Jun delivered a keynote report. He introduced the University’s development roots and development trends, as well as the development planning of Zhuhai Campus. President Luo Jun pointed out that SYSU was founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1924. Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s hope and spirit, the culture and charisma inherited in the university’s history, and the perseverance of moving forward with the country and the society, are the roots of development and innovation of the University.

President Luo Jun pointed out as a national first-class and internationally renowned modern comprehensive university, SYSU plays an important part in the development of higher education in China. To enter the first tier of universities nationwide is the SYSU’s goal during the Thirteenth Five-Year Plan period, and to build a world-class university is the University’s strategic goal for the long-term future. With five campuses in the three cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, SYSU will cultivate students who have both ability and moral integrity, able to cultivate charisma and eager to serve their country. With integrated disciplinary development of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering and medical sciences, the University is oriented toward academic frontiers, oriented toward national major strategic needs, and oriented toward national and regional economic and social development. The University is geared toward producing high-level innovative talents, developing science and technology with original intellectual property rights, and building new-type research and development institutes. In the past two years, the University has formulated the development planning for each campus and proposed the doubling the number of talents, space and funding; implemented comprehensive reforms in talent cultivation; promoted readjustment of disciplinary layout and improvement of first-level disciplines in order to strengthen basis of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, optimize development of medical sciences, and put forth efforts to alleviate shortages in engineering; constructed big research teams, big projects and big platforms, especially several major platforms for innovative research. All in all, SYSU is at a new starting point of innovation and development and maintains good momentum with a great potential.

As for Zhuhai Campus, President Luo Jun pointed out that SYSU will develop Zhuhai Campus into a modern coastal campus with a comprehensive disciplinary profile and talent training apparatus, with top level institutional management and wide-ranging global impact. After more than a decade of construction, it will realize the goal of having a complete set of disciplines in humanities, sciences, engineering and medicine, and reaching world advanced level in the fields of nuclear engineering, deep space, deep sea and deep earth disciplines. The main tasks of Zhuhai Campus will be strengthening campus planning and construction, and implementing high-level talent introduction and cultivation. In order to attract more outstanding talents to join Zhuhai Campus, the University will provide competitive salaries, and offer effective support for faculty and staff in housing, health care, and the education of their children.

President Luo Jun sent warm invitations to the young scholars present at the meeting, saying that the University is in a crucial period of building a world-class university, and in need of a large group of young scholars who are determined, capable, open-minded and ambitious, and who will put their own development into the context of the development of the University and the development of higher education in China. He welcomed young scholars to become new members of the SYSU community.

The meeting also invited Prof. Shu Yuelong, Dean of the School of Public Health (Shenzhen), Prof. Zhu Chongke, Deputy Director of the Department of Chinese (Zhuhai), Prof. Yin Changqing from the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, Prof. Li Chaozheng from the School of Marine Sciences, and Associate Professor Luo Tengfei from the University of Notre Dame to present speeches.

From the afternoon of June 17 to June 18, thirty-seven schools and departments in Guangzhou and Zhuhai campuses held sub-forums and academic exchange meetings.

More than 800 scholars from around the globe applied for the forum, and the academic committee selected nearly 400 participants from well-known universities including Harvard University, The University of Oxford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Yale University, ETH Zurich, National University of Singapore, University of Tokyo, The University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, Peking University, and many more. Nearly 70% of them have obtained or are studying for their PhD degrees overseas, and about 80% are below the age of 35. Many of the scholars have expressed their intention to join SYSU before the forum.
