President Luo Jun visited the United States and Canada to promote cooperation with universities in North America

On May 24-31, 2017, Prof. Luo Jun, President of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), visited the United States and Canada to promote cooperation with elite universities in North America such as University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), Seattle University and University of British Columbia (UBC). President Luo Jun also discussed cooperation with representative from Lingnan Foundation. The visit achieved fruitful results.

On May 25, President Luo Jun visited UC Berkeley and met with Prof. Nicholas B. Dirks, Chancellor of UC Berkeley, and Prof. Tsu-Jae King Liu, Vice Provost for Academic and Space Planning at UC Berkeley. The two sides respectively introduced their universities and recent development. They both agreed that the two universities enjoyed significant overlap in disciplinary strengths, and the cooperation in student exchange and scientific research has become increasingly closer in recent years. They also expressed the hope to conduct student exchange, joint training and research cooperation in the fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, pre-medical science, engineering, business and law. After the meeting, President Luo Jun and Chancellor Nicholas B. Dirks signed the MOU on behalf of the two universities respectively, with the aim to enhance cooperation in education, research and cultural communication.

On May 27, President Luo Jun visited Seattle University and met with Prof. Russell A. Powell, Associate Provost for Global Engagement of Seattle University. On the basis of the MOU signed at the end of last year, the two sides agreed to explore possibilities of student exchange, joint training and faculty communication in the fields of law, business and nursing, and planned to sign student exchange agreement in the near future.

On May 29-30, President Luo Jun visited UBC and met with Dr. Pamela Ratner, Vice Provost, International and Vice Provost, Enrolment and Academic Facilities of UBC. The two sides reached consensus in strengthening medical cooperation including student exchange and joint symposiums. Moreover, President Luo Jun met with Prof. William W. Mohn and Prof. Yuzhuo Wang to discuss possibilities of cooperation in microbiology, immunology and oncology, and visited relevant labs.

During the visit, President Luo Jun met with Prof. Chi-Chao Chan, Vice Chair of Lingnan Foundation, and held an in-depth discussion on SYSU projects and new directions of development. In addition, President Luo Jun also met with overseas high level academic and research talents and SYSU alumni.
