On May 21, 2017, Ms. Liu Yaming, Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA), visited Guangzhou East Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, received the guests.
President Luo Jun introducing the development of the University
President Luo Jun introduced the development of the University at the exhibition hall of the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou (NSCC-GZ), focusing on the disciplinary layout, the “three orientations” (oriented toward academic frontiers, oriented toward national major strategic needs, and oriented toward national and regional economic and social development), “three big constructions” (the construction of big research teams, big platforms and big projects), and “three outputs” (output of high-level innovative talents, output of science and technology with original intellectual property rights, output of new-type research and development institutes). He stressed the leading role of atmospheric sciences in developing the marine disciplinary cluster at the University. He thanked the CMA for the guidance and support, and expressed the hope to strengthen and deepen cooperation, jointly promote the development of the meteorological cause, and make positive contribution to improving the weather forecast accuracy, scientific research level and research achievement transformation.
Prof. Dong Wenjie, Dean of School of Atmospheric Sciences at SYSU, reported on the School’s disciplinary construction, faculty development, talent cultivation, scientific research and cooperation. Under the guidance of the CMA and through the Guangzhou Joint Research Center for Atmospheric Science, the School will promote atmospheric detection and the sharing of research resources to better serve the national meteorological cause in academic research, meteorological service and talent cultivation.
Prof. Lu Yutong, Director of NSCC-GZ, introduced the strong supporting role of NSCC-GZ and “Tianhe-2” Supercomputer, especially in the research, application and service in the atmospheric and marine areas.
Administrator Liu Yaming highly praised the educational philosophy, disciplinary construction and talent cultivation of the University as well as its efforts and contributions to the meteorological service of Guangdong province and the country. She hoped that the University would give full play to its regional advantages and characteristics, focus on national needs, promote talent introduction, talent cultivation, scientific research and social service, and accelerate innovation. CMA and SYSU will establish the “joint sharing and joint building” mode, enabling the meteorological scientific innovation mode to better serve the national economic and social development.
