On the afternoon of April 19, 2017, Mr. Leung Chun-ying, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), came to Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) to visit the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou (NSCC-GZ). He was accompanied by Ms. Qiu Hong, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong S.A.R., and Mr. Liao Jingshan, Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province.
Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, and Prof. Zheng Detao, Director of the Institute of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Development Studies, received the delegation.

First, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying listened to a report by President Luo Jun on SYSU’s role in developing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area. Located in the Pearl River Delta region, with five campuses in the three cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, SYSU is serving the Belt and Road Initiative and the Powerful Maritime Nation strategy, serving Guangdong’s innovation driven development strategy and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area development. SYSU has made positive contributions in the “three outputs”: high-level innovative talents; technologies with original intellectual property rights; and new-form research and development institutes.
Afterwards, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying visited the Tianhe-2 Supercomputer at NSCC-GZ, and listened to a report made by Prof. Lu Yutong, Director of NSCC-GZ, which focused on the collaboration between NSCC-GZ and relevant institutions in Hong Kong.
Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying praised SYSU for its efforts and contributions to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area. He expressed hope that Hong Kong universities and institutions will strengthen cooperation and exchange with SYSU, and jointly write a new chapter in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area.
