IUPUI Chancellor Nasser Paydar Visits SYSU

On February 27-28, 2017, Professor Nasser Paydar, Chancellor of Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Members of the IUPUI delegation also included Professor Kathy Johnson, Executive Vice Chancellor of IUPUI, Professor Gil Latz, Associate Vice Chancellor for International Affairs of IUPUI, Professor Thomas Davis, Dean of School of Liberal Arts of IUPUI, Dr. Zao C Xu, Director of Confucius Institute in Indianapolis, and Dr. Nian Zhang, Associate Director of Confucius Institute in Indianapolis.

On the afternoon of February 27, Professor Luo Jun, President of SYSU, met with Professor Nasser Paydar in Zhongshan Building on Guangzhou South Campus. Professor Yan Guangmei, Vice President of SYSU, Professor Ma Jun, Vice President of SYSU, and representatives from relevant schools and departments were also present in the meeting.

President Luo Jun welcomed the delegation on behalf of SYSU, and introduced recent development at SYSU. He said that IUPUI and SYSU have a long history of cooperation in many fields, and he hoped to further deepen and extend cooperation and exchange between the two universities.

Chancellor Nasser Paydar said that he was glad to visit SYSU again, and thanked SYSU for the warm reception. He briefly introduced IUPUI, saying that SYSU is an important strategic partner of IUPUI, and expressing the hope to promote mutual cooperation to a new level.

On the morning of the same day, the 2017 Confucius Institute in Indianapolis Advisory Board meeting was held in K.K. Leung Hall on Guangzhou South Campus. The meeting was moderated by Vice President Yan Guangmei. Members of the Advisory Board from SYSU and IUPUI listened to the 2016 work report and the 2017 work plan of the Confucius Institute. At the meeting, Chancellor Nasser Paydar presented the plaque for Member of the Year to Professor Zhou Xiaobing of SYSU’s School of Foreign Languages to commend his outstanding contribution to the Confucius Institute in Indianapolis.

On the afternoon of the same day, the 3rd SYSU-IUPUI Cooperative Development Committee Meeting was held. The meeting was moderated by Vice President Yan Guangmei. SYSU Representatives from Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, Department of Education Administration, Center for Teaching Development, School of Nursing, School of Data and Computer Science, School of Earth Science and Geological Engineering, Sun Yat-sen Business School, and Institute for Southern China Philanthropy attended the meeting. The two sides exchanged opinions on joint degree programs, student exchanges, faculty visits and research collaborations, and reached many consensuses.

During the visit, the IUPUI delegates also visited School of Foreign Languages, School of International Studies, School of International Relations and Institute for Southern China Philanthropy, and held discussions with relevant representatives.
