On October 27, 2016, a five-member delegation led by Prof. Pierre Mutzenhardt, President of University of Lorraine (UL), visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Members of the delegation also included Prof. Karl Tombre, Vice President for Partnerships and International Exchange of UL.
Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, met with the guests in Zhongshan Building on Guangzhou South Campus. SYSU attendees of the meeting also included Prof. Qiu Rongliang, Dean of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Associate Professor Tang Yetao, Vice Dean of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Associate Professor Wang Shizhong, Assistant to Dean of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, and Prof. Zhao Yong, Director of the Office of International Cooperation & Exchange.

Prof. Chen Chunsheng extended a warm welcome to Prof. Pierre Mutzenhardt, and introduced SYSU’s development plans for the future and collaborations with French universities. He said that SYSU and UL have a good basis of cooperation, and he hoped that the two universities would expand cooperation and exchange in other fields.
Prof. Pierre Mutzenhardt thanked SYSU for the warm reception. He hoped that in addition to enhancing cooperation in soil research, the two universities would promote collaborations in joint graduate programs, summer school, and student exchange programs, and strengthen the cooperation between UL and SYSU through the student mobility programs.
During the visit at SYSU, the delegation also visited the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, and the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou. They held in-depth discussions with representatives from the School and the Center on teaching and research collaborations.
The University of Lorraine (UL) was established in 2012 by the merger of Henri Poincaré, Nancy 2 and Paul Verlaine Universities, and the National Polytechnic Institute of Lorraine. It is a renowned comprehensive public university in France. It has important international impact in the field of contaminated soil remediation. Since the beginning of 2000, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering at SYSU and the Laboratory of Soil and Environment at University of Lorraine have maintained a good cooperative relationship and achieved fruitful results, and in December 12, 2015, the two parties and the French National Institute of Agronomic Research signed an agreement to jointly build the Sino-French Joint Laboratory of Soil Environment.
