The 2016 Autumn Work Conference of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) was held on August 17-18 on Zhuhai Campus. Centering on the theme of reform and innovation, the two-day conference was aimed to increase confidence, gather consensuses and make arrangements for the work of the University in the next stage.

On the morning of August 17, President Luo Jun delivered a report entitled “Reform and innovation is the necessary path for SYSU to build a world-class university”. He pointed out that since last year, SYSU has continued to deepen comprehensive reform and innovation in many aspects such as talent cultivation, rearrangement of first-level disciplines, “three orientations” (oriented toward academic frontiers, oriented toward national major strategic needs, and oriented toward national and regional economic and social development), “three big constructions” (construction of big research teams, big platforms and big projects), faculty development, "five campuses in three cities” (Guangzhou South Campus, Guangzhou North Campus, Guangzhou East Campus, Zhuhai Campus and Shenzhen Campus), internal governance structure, and campus basic construction. President Luo Jun said that SYSU will increase the average educational resources per student, accelerate the construction of research platforms, readjust disciplinary structure, improve talent cultivation quality, and strengthen Party building at the grassroots level in the university.

On the morning of August 18, Secretary Chen Chunsheng delivered a keynote report entitled “Strengthening Party building to ensure healthy development of the university’s cause”. He pointed out that strengthening and improving the Party’s leadership is the necessary requirement for building a socialist university with Chinese characteristics. The Party’s strong leadership provides powerful ideological, political and organizational guarantees for the university’s reform and development. Secretary Chen Chunsheng said that SYSU Party Committee will take more concrete and effective measures to further strengthen Party building work at the grassroots level in the university.

Vice President Li Mengfeng, Vice President Li Shanmin, Vice President Wei Minghai, Deputy Secretary Guo Yaping, Assistant President Cheng Huanwen, and Assistant President Yang Qinghua respectively presented a report on talent cultivation, financial work, human resources reform, improving the Party’s work style and building clean government, comprehensive treatment on campus, and the development planning of the university. Secretary Chen Chunsheng, Deputy Secretary Li Ping, Vice President Yan Guangmei, and Vice President Yu Minbin respectively hosted the relevant sessions according to the conference agenda.

In the group discussion sessions, the participants discussed issues on evaluating teaching quality and improving talent cultivation quality, strengthening the construction of Party organizations at the basic level, coordinating multiple campus development to support world-class university construction, increasing the level of academic disciplines in newly established schools, forming distinctive disciplinary advantages at the University, and etc. The group conveners also presented a summary of their discussions at the plenary session.

The university leadership, heads of functional departments, schools, affiliated hospitals, affiliated schools (middle school, primary school and kindergarten), industry group and relevant research units, CAS and CAE academicians, and recipients of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, attended the conference.
