Prof. Jean-Pierre Vinel Leads University of Toulouse Delegation on Visit to SYSU

On May 24 to 25, 2016, a delegation from the University of Toulouse led by Prof. Jean-Pierre Vinel, President of the University Toulouse 3, visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, led the reception for the Toulouse delegation, which also included Prof. Laurent Grosclaude, Vice President of the University of Toulouse, Prof. Fabrice Dumas, Vice President of the University of Toulouse 3 and eight other professors and directors from the various institutions comprising the University of Toulouse (UT). Joining President Luo on the SYSU side at the meeting in Zhongshan Building were Prof. Li Miao, Dean of the Institute of Astronomy and Space Science, as well as leaders from the School of Law, the School of Electronics and Information Technology, and the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange.

President Luo greeted the delegation and welcomed them on their visit to SYSU. He opened the exchange by discussing some of SYSU’s strengths in academics and research, and Shenzhen Campus construction. President Jean-Pierre Vinel introduced the latest developments at the University of Toulouse, and talked about his wishes for the further strengthening of cooperation and exchange between SYSU and UT.

Following the reception meeting, the UT representatives continued on to Lingnan Hall where they participated in the University of Toulouse—Sun Yat-sen University Cooperation Symposium. The Symposium consisted of four sessions, covering life sciences and medicine; language, administration, and law; science and engineering; and international programs at UT. The Symposium brought the UT representatives together with SYSU professors, staff, and students, allowing both sides to exchange research and ideas.

On the 25th, the UT delegation split into three groups to visit SYSU’s Guangzhou South Campus, Guangzhou North Campus, Guangzhou East Campus and the First Affiliated Hospital. They attended further in-depth meetings respectively with representatives from the School of Government, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Law, the School of Life Sciences, Zhongshan School of Medicine, the School of Electronics and Information Technology, and the First Affiliated Hospital.

The University of Toulouse (www.univ-toulouse.fr) is a prestigious comprehensive public university in France. It was founded in 1229. In 1969, the university split into three separate universities and numerous specialized institutions of higher education. In March 2007, these institutions were reunited into the consortium of University of Toulouse. Jean Tirole, Professor of Economics at the Toulouse School of Economics, was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Economics for his analysis of market power and the regulation of natural monopolies.
