On the morning of May 21, 2016, Liu Yunshan, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Liu Yandong, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council; Hu Chunhua, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee; Yuan Guiren, Minister of Education; and Zhu Xiaodan, Governor of Guangdong Province, attended the event. Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, and Luo Jun, President of SYSU, accompanied the leaders in the event.
At 8:40 am, Liu Yunshan came to the Institute of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Development Studies at SYSU, and listened to the report made by Zheng Detao, Director of the Institute. Liu Yunshan fully affirmed the work of the Institute, and expressed the hope that the Institute would synthesize the research force at home and abroad in the field of Hong Kong and Macao studies, and implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech at the symposium on philosophy and social sciences. Through looking for problems from reality, seeking answers from practice, and making breakthroughs from innovation, the Institute can play the important role of adviser on national policy on issues related to Hong Kong and Macao.
At 9:20 am, Liu Yunshan arrived at the Ted Sioeng Student Activity Center. Here, the students in the 21st Marxist Theory Seminar held a discussion on “The Belt and Road Initiative and Responsibilities of Contemporary College Students” chaired by Associate Professor Tan Yi from the School of Marxism. After listening to reports from five students, the central leaders made important remarks.

Liu Yandong pointed out that, after the 18th CPC National Congress, the CPC Central Committee, under the leadership of General Secretary Xi Jinping, has attached great importance to education, especially higher education. SYSU is the first stop on Liu Yunshan’s inspection tour in Guangdong after General Secretary Xi Jinping hosted the symposium on philosophy and social sciences. This shows that the CPC Central Committee attaches great importance to the University. The course arrangement in the SYSU Student Marxist Theory Seminar, which combines theoretical studies with the realities of economic and social development, not only helps students get a clear understanding of the current situation and be firm in their ideals and convictions, but also helps the students in their future development.

Liu Yunshan pointed out that, in a congratulatory letter to Tsinghua University on its 105th anniversary, General Secretary Xi Jinping encouraged young students to become talents of all-round development who are both politically sound and professionally competent. This requires the students to enhance their study of the theories of Marxism and Socialism with Chinese characteristics. Liu Yunshan said that the SYSU Student Marxist Theory Seminar is good for the ideological and political education of young students. He expressed his wish that the Seminar would enjoy continued growth and that SYSU students become contemporary young Marxists.
Afterwards, Liu Yunshan viewed the university motto written by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and an exhibition of extracurricular works by students in the Marxist Theory Seminar.
