Guangzhou Mayor Wen Guohui visits SYSU

On the morning of April 17, 2016, Mr. Wen Guohui, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee and Mayor of Guangzhou, visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and held a meeting. Mr. Ouyang Weimin, Executive Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, Mr. Wang Dong, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, Mr. Tang Hanghao, Secretary-General of Guangzhou Municipal Government; Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, Prof. Ma Jun, Vice President of SYSU, and Mr. Yang Qinghua, Assistant President of SYSU, attended the meeting.

At the meeting, Secretary Chen Chunsheng and President Luo Jun extended a warm welcome to the Mayor. Then, President Luo Jun introduced SYSU’s developments and the cooperation between the University and the City. He said that SYSU has been deeply rooted in Guangzhou for over ninety years, and especially in recent years, with great support from the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee and Guangzhou Municipal Government, has played a leading role in serving Guangzhou’s economic and social development. Since the University and the City signed a strategic cooperation agreement in 2007, the two sides have conducted extensive cooperation and made remarkable achievements. Taking the University’s goal and plans into consideration, President Luo Jun analyzed the restricting factors faced by the University in its current and future development, and expressed the hope that Guangzhou City could give strong support in improving the environment on SYSU’s Guangzhou Campuses, promoting the SYSU international innovation valley, and constructing major scientific research platforms.

After listening to President Luo Jun’s report, Mayor Wen Guohui delivered a speech. He said that SYSU is the leading university in Guangdong province, and SYSU’s development is closely related to Guangzhou’s development. For many years, SYSU has nurtured many elite talents for Guangzhou. In particular, after the signing of the strategic cooperation agreement between the University and the City, the two sides have joined hands and achieved notable results in science and technology, education, and health care, as well as in the improvement of the city environment and school conditions. As the capital of Guangdong province, Guangzhou is a national central city designated by the State Council, international business and trade center, international comprehensive transportation hub, national famous historical and cultural city, and national self-dependent innovation demonstration area. Guangzhou will fully support and actively promote the construction of the SYSU international innovation valley and scientific research platforms, which are consistent with the City’s development and orientation. Finally, the Mayor stressed that there are broad prospects for cooperation between Guangzhou and SYSU. He expressed support for the establishment of a routine mechanism of communication to deepen cooperation and serve Guangzhou’s innovation-driven development strategy.
