Seven SYSU Research Achievements Win 2015 State Science and Technology Awards

The National Science and Technology Awards Conference was held in Beijing on January 8, 2016. CPC and State leaders Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, Liu Yunshan, and Zhang Gaoli attended the Conference and presented awards to representatives of the award winners.
As the primary research unit at which the research project was undertaken and completed, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) won 4 State Science and Technology Awards in 2015, the highest ever single-year award total in the University’s history. The four awards are as follows: second prize in the State Natural Sciences Award for the project “Basic research on miniaturized photonic devices for functional integration applications”, undertaken by the research team of Prof. Li Baojun from the School of Materials Science and Engineering; second prize in the State Natural Sciences Award for the project “Studies on the mechanisms of cancer metastasis and targeting therapies for breast cancer”, undertaken by the research team of Prof. Song Erwei from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital; second prize in the State Science and Technology Progress Award for the project “The diagnostic and treatment strategies for nasopharyngeal carcinoma: innovation and application”, undertaken by the research team of Prof. Ma Jun from Sun Yat-sen Cancer Center; and second prize in the State Science and Technology Progress Award for the project “Technological innovations and clinical application of abdominal multivisceral transplantation and combined organ transplantation”, undertaken by the research team of Prof. He Xiaoshun from The First Affiliated Hospital. In addition, 3 projects with SYSU as a participating unit received 2015 State Science and Technology Awards.
SYSU was the primary research unit for four 2015 State Science and Technology Award-winning projects, which, according to statistics compiled by the Science and Technology Development Center of the Ministry of Education, ranks 7th among universities nationwide. During the 12th Five-Year Plan, SYSU won a total of 9 State Natural Sciences Awards, ranking 3rd among universities nationwide.

The 2015 State Science and Technology Awards were presented to 295 scientific projects and 7 foreign scientists. The State Preeminent Science and Technology Award was left vacant. There were 1 first prize and 41 second prizes of the State Natural Sciences Award; 1 first prize and 65 second prizes of the State Technology Invention Award; 3 grand prizes, 17 first prizes (including 3 innovation team prizes) and 167 second prizes of the State Science and Technology Progress Award. Seven foreign scientists received the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award.

On behalf of all SYSU award winners, SYSU professors Song Erwei, Li Baojun, Ma Jun, and He Xiaoshun attended the meeting and the Conference, met with CPC and State leaders, and posed for group photos.
