SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering 4th Executive Committee Meeting held at JRI

On January 9, 2015, the SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering (JIE)’s 4th Executive Committee Meeting was held at SYSU-CMU Shunde International Research Institute (JRI). Dr. Nathan Urban, Interim Provost of Carnegie Mellon University, led the CMU delegation to attend the meeting.

At the meeting, Professor Jimmy Zhu, Co-Director of JIE from CMU and Professor Wenjun Li, Co-Director of JIE from SYSU gave a report respectively to all the members present at the Executive Committee Meeting, with respect to JIE’s latest development in faculty recruitment, scientific research, academic affairs and JIE/JRI facilities.

All the members present at the Executive Committee Meeting acknowledged the progress made by JIE over the past six months since the first cohort of double degree Master’s and Ph.D. students came to JIE, and discussed the administrative issue of JIE. The members of the Executive Committee proposed that two Co-Directors should further deepen the fruits of cooperation and expand the fields of cooperation, so as to build JIE into a world-class engineering school, leading the reform of engineering education in China.

Also attending the Executive Committee Meeting were Professor Chunsheng Chen, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of SYSU; Professor Minghai Wei, Vice President of SYSU; Professor Xiping Zhu, Vice President of SYSU; Professor James Garrett, Dean of the College of Engineering at CMU; Professor Gary Fedder, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering at CMU; Professor Vijayakumar Bhagavatula, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering at CMU; Professor Jelena Kovačević, Head of Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at CMU; Ms. Romayne Botti, Associate Dean for Finance and Operations in the College of Engineering at CMU. Professor Wenhua Ling, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange of SYSU and Professor Wushao Wen, Director of Office of Key International Projects also attended the meeting.

SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering (JIE) is an international collaboration between Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) established with the official approval of Ministry of Education in November 2012. By introducing CMU’s rich experiences in engineering education and engineering research and development in the fields represented by Electrical and Computer Engineering, SYSU will give full play to its role as a comprehensive multi-disciplinary university and its local advantage to achieve win-win and complementary cooperation, providing top-notch engineering education for students at home and abroad.
