On the morning of April 17, Li Ping, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Party Committee and Vice President of SYSU Education Development Foundation, and Li Hanrong, Director or Education Development & Alumni Affairs Office and Secretary-general of SYSU Education Development Foundation, went to Shenzhen to sign the donation agreement on establishing the “Pengnian International Student Scholarship at Sun Yat-sen University” with the Yu Pengnian Foundation. Five domestic universities including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Nanjing University and Sun Yat-sen University attended the signing ceremony.
On behalf of SYSU, Deputy Secretary Li Ping thanked Mr. Yu Pengnian for his support for SYSU’s educational cause, and expressed her sincere admiration for his beneficence. She said that the international student scholarship donated by Mr. Yu would offer a great help for SYSU to build a world-class university and cultivate world-class talents, and SYSU would strictly implement the requirements to live up to his expectations.

This time Mr. Yu Pengnian donated 2 million yuan to establish the Pengnian International Student Scholarship at five universities including SYSU to fund outstanding international students to study at universities in China, with the aim to promote international exchange and communication in culture and education, attract excellent students all over the world to come to study and do research at renowned Chinese universities, and expand the international influence of Chinese universities to attract high-level international students.
In November last year, Mr. Yu visited SYSU, and in December he donated 1.5 million yuan to establish the “Scholarship and Grant of Yu Pengnian Foundation” at SYSU to reward the undergraduate students who are excellent in conduct and learning. Besides, in April this year, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of SYSU also signed an agreement with the Yu Pengnian Foundation to help Mr. Yu carry out the “Bright Action” project and promote blindness prevention and treatment in poor areas.
The Yu Pengnian Foundation is established by Mr. Yu Pengnian, a Hong Kong entrepreneur and philanthropist. Mr. Yu topped the Hurun Philanthropy List for five years in a row. He was one of the global top 14 philanthropists selected by TIME magazine in 2007, and a member of the Forbes Heroes of Philanthropy List in 2009.
