Recently, a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the cooperation in audiology was signed between Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Xinhua College of Sun Yat-sen University and Macquarie University. The partnership represented an important step to expand new areas in the international collaboration of the three institutions.
Attendees of the signing ceremony included Professor Simon Handley, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Human Sciences at Macquarie University, Professor Catherine McMahon, Head of Audiology at the Department of Linguistics, Mr. Stephen Fan, Deputy Director for International Affairs; Mr. Zhenliang Liao, Vice President of Xinhua College; Professor Tianxin Lin, Vice President of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Professor Yiqing Zheng, Assistant President and Director of the Otolaryngology Depatment of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, as well as doctors from the Otolaryngology Department at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital and teachers from the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at Xinhua College. The ceremony was presided over by Professor Tianxin Lin.
The tripartite MOU signing ceremony
Professor Tianxin Lin delivered a welcome speech on behalf of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital. He affirmed the significance of this collaboration. By stressing its impact on consolidating the international cooperation foundation, Professor Lin believed that this collaboration will not only develop the international cooperation layout plan of the hospital, but also further enhance the international communication on university-level. What’s more, it will promote the future development of healthcare service in China and Australia.
Mr. Zhengliang Liao mentioned that Xinhua College of Sun Yat-sen University has established the first independent Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences in Guangdong Province, and it holds similar views on education with the other two collaborative counterparts.
Professor Simon Handley pointed out that the tripartite collaboration in audiology will be a focal point of international development for Macquarie University in the next five years. Looking forward to the future, he envisioned a bright prospect for long-term cooperation.
Afterwords, Professor Tianxin Lin, Mr. Zhengliang Liao and Professor Simon Handley signed the tripartite MOU.
After the signing ceremony, the ENT research team from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital and the audiology experts from Macquarie University held a scientific research workshop and an in-depth discussion on cooperation details. The workshop was hosted by Professor Yiqing Zheng, Director of the Otolaryngology Depatment. The professors introduced their respective research fields and achievements, and discussed the feasibility of collaboration on the accurate targeted delivery into human inner ears. In the discussion, Professor Yiqing Zheng also put forward a new proposal of remote tele-consultation and online training.
The Macquarie University delegation also visited the ENT Hearing Center and the Historical Museum of the hospital, as well as the laboratory of the Department of Hearing and Speech Science at Xinhua College. Professor Simon Handley said that it was his honor to work together with the first Western medicine hospital in China, and he sincerely hoped that this cooperation will bring fruitful results.
