SYSU welcomes delegation from University of St Andrews and University of Bristol

Professor Stephen Gethins, Assistant Vice Principal and Dean of International of the University of St Andrews, and Professor Liang Fong-Wong, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor Internationalization of the University of Bristol, visited Sun Yat-sen University on September 22, 2023. Professor Xie Shi, Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University, met with the delegation at the No. 1 Meeting Room of K. K. Leung Hall on the Guangzhou South Campus.

At the meeting, Vice President Xie Shi extended warm welcome to the delegation from the University of St Andrews and the University of Bristol. He said that Sun Yat-sen University values collaborations with British universities. Sound cooperation has been carried out between Sun Yat-sen University and more than 10 British universities in recent years, covering talents training, faculty and student exchange, and research. Cooperation is also found in multiple fields, such as medicine, geography, economics, language, chemistry, government affairs, law, tourism, and computer science. Sun Yat-sen University is located near Hong Kong and Macao, he pointed out that the University will leverage the geographical advantage and policy benefits of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) to further expand the collaborations between Sun Yat-sen University and British universities into more academic fields at all levels.

Assistant Vice Principal Stephen Gethins thanked Sun Yat-sen University for the warm reception and hospitality, and introduced the development of the University of St. Andrews in recent years. He said that Sun Yat-sen University and the University of St Andrews have great potential of collaboration. He hoped that the two universities will encourage more teachers and students to visit one another to explore cooperation opportunities.

Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor Liang Fong-Wong said that Sun Yat-sen University and the University of Bristol have enjoyed long cooperation. She hoped that the two universities will continue to strengthen collaboration in fields such as medicine, chemistry and geography, and that the University of Bristol, together with the University of St Andrews and Sun Yat-sen University, will promote stronger connections as well as more academic exchange and cooperation between British universities and member universities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance.

Dr. Zhang Zhe, Deputy Director of SYSU Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, as well as leaders of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, School of Geography and Planning, School of Foreign Languages, and School of Chemistry attended the meeting. They introduced the development of SYSU and the hospital and schools respectively, and discussed opportunities of collaborations in various disciplines with the delegates.

Representatives from the Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulate-General Guangzhou also attended the meeting.

Founded in 1413 and located in St Andrews, the University of St Andrews is the oldest and highest-ranking university in Scotland. According to the QS World University Rankings 2024, it is ranked 95th worldwide. The University of Bristol is founded in 1876. It is located at the heart of Bristol, a city in the south-west of England. According to the QS World University Rankings 2024, it is ranked 55th worldwide.
