A Delegation from Ateneo De Manila University Visited SYSU

From March 27 to 28, Prof. Roberto C. Yap, President of Ateneo De Manila University, Dr. Aristotle Dy, President of Xavier School, and Dr. Ellen H. Palanca, Confucius Institute Foreign Director, visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), and attended “SYSU-ADMU Confucius Institute Board Meeting 2022”. During the visit, the delegation also visited the Department of Chinese Language and Literature and Zhongshan School of Medicine of SYSU.

Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, met with the delegation in the VIP room of Zhongshan Building on the morning of Mar. 27th, accompanied by Prof. Xiao Haipeng, Executive Vice President of SYSU.

Secretary Chen Chunsheng extended a warm welcome to President Roberto C. Yap and thanked Ateneo De Manila University for its efforts in promoting education of Chinese language and culture. He hoped that the Confucius Institute would become a great platform to deepen exchanges and cooperation between the two universities covering various disciplines and fields.

President Roberto C. Yap spoke highly of the rapid development of SYSU in recent years, emphasizing that Ateneo De Manila University would continue to support the Confucius Institute in Chinese language education in the hopes of consolidating cooperation in the fields of medicine, economics, sociology, and humanities between the two universities.

Later, President Roberto C. Yap and his delegation met with Prof. Xiao Haipeng, Executive Vice President of SYSU and Chairman of the Chinese Board of the Confucius Institute, as well as heads of relevant departments of SYSU in the SYSU- ADMU Confucius Institute Board Meeting 2022. The participants listened to the work report of the Confucius Institute for the year 2022, and President Roberto C. Yap and Executive Vice President Xiao Haipeng made their concluding remarks respectively, fully recognizing the Confucius Institute’s achievements in the past few years despite the pandemic and challenges. The board hope that the Confucius Institute will serve as a bridge to strengthen cooperation between the two universities in the fields of talent training, research and social services.

On the 28th, the delegation visited the Department of Chinese Language and Literature and Zhongshan School of Medicine of SYSU, where a heated discussion was held on the cooperation between the two universities.

The Confucius Institute at Ateneo De Manila University was established in October 2006 as SYSU's first Confucius Institute, and also the very first for the Philippines. Since its establishment, the Confucius Institute has served as a bridge which has greatly deepened the friendship between China and the Philippines and has exerted extensive influence on the Philippine society.
