On September 11, 2017, Dr. José de Jesús Williams, Rector of the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY), visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Members of the UADY delegation also included Mr. Carlos Alberto Estrada Pinto, General Director for Academic Affairs, Dr. Andreas G. Aluja Schunemann, Head of Cooperation and Internationalization. SYSU President Luo Jun met with the delegation in Zhongshan Building on Guangzhou South Campus, accompanied by Vice President Xiao Haipeng and leaders from the School of Geography and Planning, School of International Studies, and Office of International Cooperation & Exchange.

President Luo Jun extended a warm welcome to the delegation, and introduced the disciplinary structure and campus construction of SYSU. He said that it is important to strengthen cooperation and exchange between the two universities in the background of the Belt and Road Initiative. He hoped that the two universities would deepen cooperation in the future.
Rector José de Jesús Williams thanked SYSU for the warm reception, and introduced the history and disciplines of UADY. He said that the two universities have maintained close cooperative relations since the establishment of the Confucius Institute at UADY in 2007. He hoped that the two universities would explore cooperation in teaching and research.
During the visit, the UADY delegation held discussions with leaders from SYSU’s School of Geography and Planning, School of International Studies, and School of Data and Computer Science. They also visited the National Supercomputer Center on Guangzhou East Campus to further expand cooperation between the two sides.
The Confucius Institute at the Autonomous University of Yucatan (CI-UADY) was jointly established by SYSU and UADY in 2007. Founded in 1922, UADY is one of the best universities in Mexico and the best public university in the Southeast of Mexico. In August 2016, SYSU President Luo Jun accompanied Vice Premier Liu Yandong in the inauguration ceremony of the Confucius Classroom at the Universidad del Caribe (overseen by CI-UADY), and visited UADY.
