The selection process for the “Top 10 SYSU News Stories of 2016” was completed on January 7, 2017. It was organized by the publicity department with the aim of reviewing Sun Yat-sen University’s reform and development in 2016, and showcasing the University’s achievements in talent cultivation, scientific research, social service, and cultural inheritance and innovation.
The selection event adopted the method of “online voting + expert evaluation”. Faculty, students, alumni and citizens actively participated in the online voting process. The evaluation group, which consisted of experts from SYSU and representatives of social media, conducted evaluation.
The results are as follows:
1. The SYSU Party Committee studied the spirit of a series of important speeches by General Secretary Xi Jinping, strengthened ideological and theoretical education and value leadership, and deeply and continually carried out the “Two Studies, One Action” campaign.
2. Liu Yunshan, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, visited SYSU.
3. Vice Premier Liu Yandong and Minister of Education Chen Baosheng each visited the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou located at SYSU.
4. Hu Chunhua, Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, visited the Huizhou Research Institute of Sun Yat-sen University.
5. SYSU held a series of activities to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Sun Yat-sen to honor his great achievements.
6. The number of SYSU projects funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China and the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2016 reached new heights.
7. Seven SYSU research achievements won 2015 State Science and Technology Awards.
8. Several SYSU scholars published high level research achievements in renowned international academic journals.
9. SYSU sports teams achieved good results in national competitions.
10. The maiden voyage of Sun Yat-sen University’s “Scientific Investigation of the South China Sea” was launched, and the feasibility research report on the comprehensive marine research fieldwork vessel passed expert evaluation.
