Minister of Education Chen Baosheng Visits NSCC-GZ at SYSU

On the morning of November 13, 2016, Mr. Chen Baosheng, Minister of Education, visited the National Supercomputer Centre in Guangzhou (NSCC-GZ) on Guangzhou East Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU).

Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee; Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU; Mr. Lan Foan, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province; Mr. Lin Ji, Deputy Secretary-General of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province; Mr. Luo Weiqi, Director General of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province; and Mr. Wang Dong, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, attended the event.

First, Minister Chen Baosheng visited the SYSU Science and Technology Innovation Achievements Exhibition and listened to President Luo Jun’s report on the teaching and research work at the University. At present, based in the Pearl River Delta region, the University has formed the distinctive and coordinated development of five campuses in three cities, with improved and increased talent development, research competitiveness, operational funding, international influence and international ranking in recent years. The guiding idea of scientific and technological innovation is to be oriented toward academic frontiers, oriented toward national major strategic needs, and oriented toward national and regional economic and social development. Through the construction of big research teams, big platforms and big projects, major research innovation platforms such as supercomputing, the “Tianqin Program”, the South China Sea Laboratory and national high-end thank tanks have made noticeable progress.

Afterwards, Minister Chen Baosheng visited Tianhe-2 supercomputer at NSCC-GZ and listened to a report made by Prof. Lu Yutong, Director of the Center. Tianhe-2 has topped the TOP500 list of world’s fastest supercomputers for six consecutive iterations. As of September this year, the Center has more than 1,500 clients, with application areas covering astronomical and cosmological research, atmospheric and marine environment research, industrial design and manufacturing, new energy and new materials R & D, biomedicine and healthcare, and smart city construction, among many other areas.
