On the afternoon of Nov.20^th, the award ceremony for the 2009 Chen Ning Yang Physics Postgraduate Scholarship of SYSU, took place in David Sin Wai-kin Tang. Professor Chen Ning Yang, one of the most famous physicist and the Nobel Prize winner, attended the ceremony. Li Ping, deputy secretary of party committee of SYSU acknowledged at the ceremony, with a total of 200 people attending, including Li Zhonghua, former vice-president of SYSU, and delegates of teachers and students.

Prof. Chen Ning Yang remarked at the ceremony that, scholarship system is very helpful for students, a useful means through which students complete their education and be inspired to devote themselves to scientific research. He also urged students of physical major to take the current opportunity, stick to their research orientation to secure a bright future. He believed that, when he revisits SYSU ten years later, these students would have achieved excellence results.

Li Ping, deputy secretary of Party Committee of SYSU, emphasized in his acknowledgement that earlier on in the 80’s, Prof Yang had set up the foundation at SYSU, set up academic research center, and raised funds for fundamental research and academic exchange events, and had made great contributions to the development of SYSU. The foundation of Chen Ning Yang Physics Postgraduate Scholarship of SYSU will inspire more postgraduates, especially those major in science and engineering to reach the pinnacle of science through devotion and innovation.

The winners of the scholarship were four PhDs and one master: Xing Xiangjun, Chen Lixiang, Luo Xin, Xiao Zhiming and Zhu Heng.

Prof Yang carried out a cordial conversation that morning with the students of Normale Class major in theoretical physics of the school of engineering, and shared with them his research and life experiences. The students were greatly impressed by Prof Yang’s invigoration, rigorous logic and clear thinking.
