In celebration of the 20
th anniversary of the founding of the Baosteel Education Foundation, the Baosteel Education Award Ceremony 2009 was held at the Shanghai Talent Development Institute on 16 Nov. The short list for the (Baosteel Education) winners was announced and awards were conferred at the ceremony. A total of 690 students from 104 universities and 18 institutes of Chinese Academy of Science claimed Baosteel Outstanding Student Award, with 50 students claiming Top Award of Baosteel Outstanding Student, and 241 teachers claiming Baosteel Outstanding Teacher Award(among whom, 10 claimed Top Award of Baosteel Outstanding Teacher, 6 claimed Nomination of Top Award of Baosteel Outstanding Teacher). Chen Lixiang, third-year SYSU doctorate student from the School of Physics & Engineering won the Top Award of Baosteel Outstanding Student. It is the first time that SYSU students have claimed this award. 9 SYSU students won the Baosteel Outstanding Student Award 2009: Chen Sushan, Feng Xiaoyuan, Li Yanhua, Wang Linting, Zhang Cuiping, Li Chuan, Qian Xihong, Liu Lu, Gao Jie; 4 teachers claimed the Baosteel Outstanding Teacher Award 2009: Xiao Bin, Li Zhibing, Gao Guoquan, Wang Liantang. Prof. Gao Guoquan and SYSU student Liu Lu took over the awards at the ceremony on behalf of the award recipients from SYSU.
The Baosteel Education Fund (formerly "Baosteel Scholarship") was established in 1990, which is a non-public offering fund administered by the Ministry of Education and exclusively funded by Baosteel. Adhering to its mission of “rewarding and encouraging outstanding talents, respecting the teaching profession, promoting the collaborations between industries and university, and lending support to the educational development”, the Baosteel Education Fund has awarded teachers and students and provided special educational funds over the past 20 years. SYSU was accredited by the Baosteel Education Fund for scholarship review in 2000, and to date, a total of 167 teachers and students have received the Baosteel Education Award, with one teacher receiving the Top Award for the Baosteel teaching excellence, one student receiving the Top Award for Baosteel Outstanding Student, 40 teachers receiving/ claiming the Baosteel award for Outstanding Teacher, and 115 students receiving the Baosteel Outstanding Student Award.
