Recently, the Ministry of Education and the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council announced that 20 PhD students of Sun Yat-sen University were honored with the 2012 “PhD Student Academic Newcomer Award”. A total of 699 current PhD students from 43 graduate training units won the award.
In April 2010, in order to implement the strategy of strengthening the nation, encourage original innovation and independent innovation, and improve the quality of PhD programs, the Ministry of Education and the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council set up the “PhD Student Academic Newcomer Award”. The aim of the award is to “cultivate academic newcomers and encourage innovative development”, and provide funding to excellent PhD students with outstanding academic results and strong potential for research innovation. This is the highest academic award for PhD students nationwide.
The annual “PhD Student Academic Newcomer Award” selects around 5% of the national total enrollment in PhD programs of the year. Each winner is awarded 30,000 to 50,000 yuan of research funding to help the student take part in high level international and national academic exchange, participate in innovative scientific research and write a high quality dissertation.
