The sixth Southern Metropolis Daily News reporting awards and the scholarships “Southern Metropolis•In Spring” were presented in Guangzhou Xinhai Concert Hall on Februray 25, where 30 university students, the emerging stars in the circle of press, caught everyone’s eyes. Xiao Yonghong, a postgraduate student from the Department of Public Relations in School of Communication and Design (SCD), won the second prize scholarship in the event with his Tencent and Sohu series of news converage named “The Diary of Copenhagen”.
The evaluation stage of the sixth Southern Metropolis Daily News Scholarship started at October last year with 40 universities opening the broadcast channels for the competition and over 300 students applying from 95 universities in 25 provinces and cities thourought the nation. 30 candidates from 21 universities were awarded eventually after 2 rounds of selection .
Yang Xingfeng, the president of Southern Newspaper Group and the proprieter of Nanfang Daily, Zhang Dongming, the General Manager of Southern Newspaper Group and Cao Ke, the editor in chief of Southern Metropolis Daily attended the ceremony. So did the principals of School of Journalism and Communication from universities such as Peking Univeristy, Tsinghua University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Sun Yat-sen Universtiy, Jinan University and Shantou University. The executive vice-president of SCD in our university Wu Fei, and the deputy dean Yang Xiaoyan were also invited to attend and present the awards in this ceremony.
It was not the first time that students from SCD receieved this honour. Wang Jifan, Grade 2003 undergraduage student from Department of Journalism, won the Special Award for his independent magazine “RICE” in 2008.
