Students from School of Software SYSU Winning First Prize of Android Application Development Competition for Chinese College Students

On December 15, the results of Android Application Development Competition for Chinese College Students held by Google came out: two 08 undergraduates from School of Software SYSU, Rong Yu (studying application software) and Wang Hao (studying embedded software and system), won the first prize of this competition. Under the instruction of Prof. Liu Ning, they have finished and submitted their final work “Yue Chu Xin Cai”, which has beaten 900 other works of application programs, and been awarded 20,000 Yuan and two Android phones. In addition, students from School of Software have also won two honorable mentions and they are 07 undergraduates Wei Zenghui and Li Yongqu (both studying embedded software and system) with their work “Ball Watch” and 09 undergraduates Wu Haojian and Yan Shaobo (both studying embedded software and system) with their work “Crazy Tank”. And Du Xin 07 undergraduate (studying application software) with his work “Tips” has won an honorable mention out of 200 works in document design.

All the junior college students, undergraduates, masters and doctors in China can take part in Android Application Development Competition for Chinese College Students. And this competition lasts for four months from its signing up to final. Since the influence of cell phone application grows and Android provides an open platform, this competition has attracted a great number of students from dozens of colleges and universities in China, such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, China Renmin University, Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Xi’an Jiaotong University and other famous colleges. For the final, altogether 90 have been selected out of more than 900 pieces of works submitted by the students. Through the Public voting on internet and the evaluation of specialist group formed by professionals from Google and university teachers, one first prize, five second prizes, ten third prizes, 50 honorable mentions have been given for their novelty and originality, effective application in Android platform, use experience, and technical complexity. The first prize winner “Yue Chu Xin Cai” of Rong Yu and Wang Hao got a synthesized score of 88.09 and 816 votes on the internet. And the judges of this competition remark that “this is a quite good idea and implementation with high originality and it has integrated elements of both music and games; the interface is stunning and the program runs well and smoothly”. Since 2009, School of Software and Google have co-established “Serial Courses on IT High Tech”. Sponsored by Google and for providing the students with chances of scientific learning and practice, School of Software has set up the Google Android Phones Club in which the students interested in scientific research gather together and professional teachers would give them instructions. And two pieces of works by Google Android Phones Club have won prizes and Rong Yu the first prize winner was once the first chairman of that club.
