2017 SYSU Sub Camp of the National Youth Science Camp in Universities Launched

On the morning of July 17, the opening ceremony of the 2017 SYSU Sub Camp of the National Youth Science Camp in Universities was held in Swasey Hall on Guangzhou South Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Mr. Chen Zhangyu, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Education Department at the Children & Youth Science Center of Guangdong Province; Prof. Yu Minbin, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Party Committee; Prof. Yao Daoxin, Deputy Dean of the School of Physics of SYSU; Ms. Liu Fang, Deputy Party Secretary of the School of Materials Science and Engineering; and Mr. Yan Xiaohui, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Youth Association, attended the opening ceremony.

At the opening ceremony, Deputy Secretary Yu Minbin extended a warm welcome to all camp members on behalf of SYSU. He pointed out that talent cultivation is the fundamental mission of universities. Meanwhile, with scientific resources and strengths, universities can play an important role in disseminating scientific knowledge, ideas and methods, and improving the scientific qualities of the youth. It is significant for high school students to attend the summer camp in universities and experience scientific research and college life in advance.

Chen Shiyi, a student from Kaili No. 1 High School of Guizhou Province, made a speech on behalf of all members of the science camp.

Afterwards, Deputy Director Chen Zhangyu and Deputy Secretary Yu Minbin jointly presented the flag to the science camp member.

The science camp is sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education, and co-hosted by Sun Yat-sen University, Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology, and the Department of Education of Guangdong Province. It is undertaken by the School of Physics, School of Materials Science and Engineering, and School of Life Sciences of SYSU. The camp members include 220 high school students and teachers from 10 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions such as Guangdong, Chongqing, Anhui, Hunan, Hubei, Zhejiang, Xinjiang, Guizhou, Hebei and Yunan. From July 16 to July 20, the camp members will attend lectures given by distinguished professors, visit research facilities on campus, carry out scientific and technological activities, and communicate with SYSU students.
