On October 20, 2015, Mr. Du Zhanyuan, Vice Minister of Education and Member of the CPC Leading Group of Ministry of Education (MOE), visited East Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), accompanied by Mr. Huang Baoyin, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Postgraduate Education of MOE and Deputy Director-General of the Office of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, and Mr. Wang Binwei, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province.
Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, Mr. Yang Qinghua, Assistant President of SYSU, Prof. Qu Lianghu, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Biocontrol, and Prof. Yu Siyuan, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies, attended the event.
Mr. Du Zhanyuan visited the State Key Laboratory of Biocontrol and the State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies on East Campus, and learned about the disciplinary construction and international cooperation at the two laboratories.

Afterwards, Prof. Luo Jun chaired the meeting and presented a report. He said that in recent years the international influence and research competitiveness of SYSU have kept increasing. In order to accelerate the construction of world-class university, SYSU will adhere to the “Three Orientations” (oriented toward academic frontiers, oriented toward national major strategic needs, and oriented toward national and regional economic and social development), and realize the overall development of all disciplines through enhancing the “Three Big Constructions” (constructing big research teams, big platforms and big projects). Our objective of talent cultivation is to train students who have both ability and moral integrity, able to cultivate charisma and eager serve their country. The University will support researches in the fields such as marine research on the South China Sea, precision medicine, supercomputing and big data, microelectronics as well as national think tank. Meanwhile, the University will explore new points of growth for sustainable development and optimize campus planning for future development.

Mr. Du Zhanyuan said that SYSU should further define the key areas for development and promote reform on the basis of the disciplines. The Ministry of Education will provide full support for SYSU to improve its overall strengths.
