The 3rd Guangdong Public Welfare Volunteer Cultural Festival and Canton Fair on Volunteer Service opened in Guangzhou on December 4, 2013. A total of 447 volunteer service projects of 416 organizations across the country were on display, including several public welfare organizations from SYSU such as “Bamboo Dragonfly” Voluntary Assistance for People with Disabilities, Postgraduate Volunteer Teaching Group of Sun Yat-sen University, Charity Bookstore and Rice Donate. Meanwhile, SYSU also sent 200 student volunteers to participate in the fair.

This fair highly recommended “Bamboo Dragonfly” Voluntary Assistance for People with Disabilities, a project set up by SYSU Youth Association, “Inspire Wisdom” Social Services Team and Rehabilitation Center in Tangxia, Tianhe District. Ma Xingrui, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, and Director of the Committee for Social Affairs of Guangdong Province, and Wang Hongyan, Secretary of the CYL Central Committee, came to the “Bamboo Dragonfly” booth, listened to the introduction of the project and encouraged the volunteers to serve people’s livelihood.

According to Jiang Zejun, a student volunteer from South Campus of SYSU, “Bamboo Dragonfly” in Chinese pinyin sounds similar to “Zhu Qing Ting”, which means “help, clear, listen” — “help others and help yourself, on a clear day with sunshine and hope, listen to each other and communicate with your heart”. The project combines physical rehabilitation with psychological appeasement. Students from Zhongshan School of Medicine of SYSU make physical treatment plans, and volunteers majoring in Social Work provide professional skills to care and help people with disabilities, with the hope that they can “fly proudly and freely like a bamboo dragonfly in the bright sky”.
