On the afternoon of Nov. 8, “Forum for the 10th Anniversary of SYSU Graduate Voluntary Teaching Team”, hosted jointly by the Guangdong Youth Volunteers Federation and SYSU Youth League Committee, took place on the South Campus. Huang Daren, President of SYSU, Hou Baosen, Deputy Director of Volunteer Work Department under Communist Youth League Central Committee, Zeng Yanru, Deputy Secretary of Guangdong League Committee, and Li Ping, Deputy Secretary of Party Committee of SYSU, attended the forum. On the forum representative members of all previous graduate voluntary teaching teams exchanged and shared the memorable days in the west. Xu Xiaozhu, National May Day Labor Medalist, and National Youth Medalist, and also a representative cadre send to aid Tibet, as well as student representatives helped by the voluntary teaching team also attended the forum and shared their impression of the voluntary teaching team.
As the only higher education institution included in the Youth League Central Committee and Ministry of Education’s “Relay Program for Youth Volunteers Alleviating Poverty”, for ten years in consecutive, Sun Yat-sen University has dispatched a total of 55 postgraduate students to more than 10 education support site in undeveloped regions of the west including Qinghai, Gansu, Ningxia, Shanxi, Guangxi, Tibet, as well as Yunnan to carry out voluntary teaching missions with each student fulfilling one year of service. Apart from accomplishing the vested teaching tasks, SYSU volunteer teaching team also integrated various resources from the university and the society to establish “SYSU Graduate Volunteer Teachers Team Scholarship” as well as ‘”Raise the Hope of the West – One on One Fellowships”. According to the statistics, donations collected through the voluntary teaching team’s programs such as “One on One” has reached more than 1 million RMB and the number of indigent students from the west benefiting from the SYSU volunteer teaching team has exceeded 5000.Under the aid of the voluntary teaching team, a great many of indigent students from the west were able to complete their education, find their place in the society and have their life changed.
This year, SYSU published My Youth, My Team – Commemorative Collected Works for the 10th Anniversary of SYSU Graduate Voluntary Teaching Team to be distributed throughout the country Liu Yandong, member of CPC Central Committee and State Council Committee fully recognized the team’s voluntary spirit of “Dedication, Friendship, Mutual Assistance and Progress” in his reply upon receiving a letter and the Collected works from SYSU voluntary teaching team. He also urged students to continually respond to the call of the central party: “Go to the grassroots! Go to the west! Go to the places where nation needs you most!”
