Donation Ceremony of Prof. Wu Hongcong’s Collection of Books Held in South Campus

On the morning of 9 November, the donation ceremony of Prof. Wu Hongcong’s collection of books was held in the Library of South Campus. Prof. Wu, Luo Yuanfang deputy governor of Department of Education in GuangdongProvince, Li Ping deputy secretary of Party Committee, leaders from schools and departments of SYSU, and Prof. Wu’s relatives, colleagues, friends, and students attended the ceremony.

In his early years, Prof. Wu studied in National Southwest Associated University in Kunming, studying under many great masters, such as Wen Yiduo, Chen Yinque, Liu Wendian, Luo Yong, Shen Congwen and others. After his graduation, Prof. Wu stayed in NationalSouthwestAssociatedUniversity as an assistant until the associated university broke up. Prof. Wu is famous in China for his studies in modern literature and regarded an expert in Lu Xun and Qu Fengjia studies. He has worked as director of Modern Chinese Literature Association, honorary director of Lu Xun Study Association, vice-chairman of Chinese New Literature Academy, chairman of GuangdongNewLiteratureAcademy, chairman of Qiu Fengjia Study Association and other duties. Prof. Wu has worked for more than 27years in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at SYSU, and has made outstanding contributions to the developments of Department and training qualified personnel.

At the ceremony, Prof. Wu in his speech said that he felt very delighted to see these books which had been with him for such a long time added to the Library of SYSU and the students could read them in the future. Wu has also expressed his thanks for the support given by the Library. Luo Yongfang, Li Ping and Qiu Guoxin secretary of Party Committee appraised the academic achievements of Prof. Wu and his outstanding contributions to disciplinary developments and talent training. Cheng Huanwen the librarian has a review of the reasons and processes of Prof. Wu’s donation. Then Jin Qinjun, student of Prof. Wu, recalled the profound emotion with his teacher and expressed his best wishes for Prof. Wu.

Prof. Wu, with his 92nd birthday coming soon, has decided to donate his collection of 8,000 books to the Library of SYSU. These books are Prof. Wu’s reference books in his long-time teaching and studies and are of great academic and collection values for modern literature, Lu Xun studies and Qiu Fengjia studies. For all this, the Library of SYSU has opened up a “Prof. Wu Hongcong’s Collection” among other collections, and both teachers and students can read these valuable books soon.
