On the occasion of the 40th Teachers' Day in China, the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (FAH-SYSU) held a recognition ceremony on September 10 to honor the contributions of its teachers and educators.

"To become a good educator, a young doctor should possess strong clinical skills, scientific and technological innovation abilities, teaching abilities, and leadership. Only by having these qualities can one become an outstanding educator," President Xiao Haipeng, Executive Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University and President of FAH-SYSU encouraged young teachers to aspire to embody these qualities in his speech.

He said that young doctors and young teachers should strive in this direction, and become administrators, leaders, politicians, and diplomats in medical education in the future,  contributing to the building of a global community of health for all.

Additionally, the conference also presented the International Medical Education Award for Outstanding Contributions to Trevor Gibbs, the former President of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), and David Taylor, Professor of Medical Education and Physiology at Gulf Medical University in the United Arab Emirates.

In recent years, FAH-SYSU has continuously deepened its international cooperation in medical education. In 2023, at the annual conference of AMEE, the world's largest academic organization for medical education, FAH-SYSU was awarded the ASPIRE-to-Excellence Award (International Cooperation), making it the first medical institution globally to receive this honor, and the first in the Chinese mainland to receive an AMEE award.

Professor Trevor Gibbs recalled his cooperation with FAH-SYSU over the past 15 years and expressed his admiration for the significant progress made by the hospital. "I have seen tremendous changes here, tremendous changes from people who never understood education to people now who have earned master's degrees and PhD degrees and have become some of the best educators I've ever encountered."

Luis Lobón, Managing Principal of Mass General Brigham Global Advisory and Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School, likened the partnership between his organization and FAH-SYSU to that of "twin organizations," emphasizing their shared vision, mission, and accomplishments.

"We have had hundreds and hundreds of hours of knowledge transfer and peer-to-peer exchange of knowledge. And also, we are here now helping President Xiao and his team to undertake their nearest next transformation and integration of the healthcare system," Professor Luis Lobón explained.

Expressing his profound optimism for the future, Professor Luis Lobón underscored the depth and breadth of this partnership, envisioning it to extend well into the coming years and across the globe.

According to President Xiao Haipeng, FAH-SYSU has signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with Harvard for the next five years, which encompasses a broad range of medical specialties, fostering deeper integration and collaboration. "Together, we will establish several collaborative innovation platforms and educational platforms, utilizing them to tackle some of the most prominent medical challenges, thereby fostering talent development and ultimately alleviating human suffering by overcoming medical difficulties."
