On June 2, 2015, the reporter learned from Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) that according to the latest statistics released by Essential Science Indicators (ESI), 17 disciplines of SYSU enter ESI top 1%. Following Peking University which has 19 disciplines among top 1%, Sun Yat-sen University is ranked 2nd among universities in China, tied with Zhejiang University.

ESI is an important indicator in evaluating the academic level and influence of universities and research institutions as well as assessing the development of disciplines. A discipline can be included in the ranking only when the citations of papers in the recent 11 years are rated among top 1%.

The ESI database has 22 fields. 17 disciplines of SYSU enter global top 1%, covering more than two-thirds of the fields in ESI database. The 17 disciplines are: Clinical Medicine, Chemistry, Physics, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Biology and Biochemistry, Materials Science, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Engineering, Neuroscience & Behavior, Environment/Ecology, Plant and Animal Science, Immunology, Microbiology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Agricultural Sciences, and Social Sciences, General.

It is learned that last year SYSU had 16 disciplines rated among ESI top 1%, and this year Microbiology enters the ranking as a “newcomer”.
